Think I shot my best group ever in Low Node!

Took My Savage 340 30 WCF out again this morning....now that she is back in action!
Range wasn't pleasant like it was yesterday....Today it was in the 20's with 15 mph gusts which was hitting my right side of my body. (Glad I had my balaclava in the car to keep my face and head warm)
Did not have much faith in the day because my fingers were numb and my hand warmer died but I was determined.
I shot 2 proven loads to compare groups...I had 25 rounds of each. I was shooting my favorite target bullet ....the NOE 165 grain FN Ranch Dog ( Trad. Lube Style )
These were plain based ...Each bullet weighed & all were = / - .1 grain at 166.7 gr These were coated in Smokes Clear PC and sized .3105" ( that is what my Lee push through sizer mic's at) I loaded both 7.4 Grain Unique and 6.2 grain American Select...25 of each These charges were individually weighed to the exact amount. The COL for these was 2.465" for my chamber and it just touches the lands!
I shot a 10 shot group and a 15 shot group on each loading.
The top left was the first 10 shot group ( Unique) The wind gusts from the right needed to be read as this group told me! By the Top right Group of 15, I was doing better with waiting out the wind gusts!

Then I shot the lower targets; these were the American Select loads:
The Bottom Left was 10 shots and the gusts were diminishing... The bottom right was the 15 shot group....and this is probably the best group I ever shot wit this rifle! The total group was 1 inch center to center....Excluding the out out of group shot the other 14 shots tore a 3/4 in center to center hole!
Man I'm just ecstatic ! Maybe a 8 month vacation from rifle shooting and the new heavier trigger pull had something to do with it!

good shooting.

I know that wind can kill you.
I put up a pair of targets me and Littlegirl shot when I was teaching her a few years back showing the difference between me being able to read the wind, and her [at the time] inexperience.
her target was a straight line from the center dot to about 1-1/2"s to the left.
it looked like someone took a paper punch and slid it up against the paper then made a series of punches one right next to the other.
mine was clustered on the center dot. [well mostly, anyway.. LOL]
they were shot with the same rifle and loads on the same day.

Very nice shooting Jim. I love that bullet in my 340 as well. My low node powder for that one is Redot.

Only bullets fired thru mine by me have been NOE 165RD in cup point & COWW alloy. I have been shooting 4198 and one load of 2400. All ahot real well gor me espectally cause Im using fa tory iron sights.

Do you have yours scoped? ( I have no tapped holes for scope only optic.)

Love that RD style. Mine is a modded version and it shoots well in the BO too. 336 & BO AR. Run a little hotter and 9x scope cause I can't use irons anymore. This was chrony run so not really checking accuracy.

IMR 4198 in charges of 24gr. or less used to be my favorite .30 cal. CB (with GC's) until I discovered the harder-to-get and much more expensive 5744 in slightly smaller doses for that caliber. These days, however, with PB or .30cal. CB's where I deliberately omit the GC (e.g., Saeco #315), Unique is my propellant of choice, with Blue Dot being a close second: Very accurate low recoil loads.

Jim,

It is a versatile powder that a large number of reloaders know little about.
I'm glad that you are enjoying using the powder.

Ben,
1 grain ( and it measures great in my RCBS uniflo) has turned my two lowly .25 acp vest pocket pistols in to real shooters at 6 feet ( shoot a bad guy any further and it may be murder on the CC holder!) My WW1 and WW2 32 acp's enjoy it as well! 5 yard groups are very good!
223 cal well a toss up between it and Unique... 30 cal... well I just did the test and Am/Sel hands down! 8mm Am/select hands down!
Now 358 win Still trying to find a winner But It is close to the top!

I had a peep on order outta Canada. (Explained in my thread on my 340)

(I have a early gun thats not D&T for side mount.)
Im still hoping to find a peep. But I have contemplated a single weaver base then a small reflex dot site. This is a range toy for me just a cast bullet launcher. But I do like it!!

I enjoy reading others using theres!

CW In the photo above Where you show the left side of the barreled action.....That receiver is not drilled for Receiver sights either?
Actually what it that barrel on the action? Where is the barrel nut and Sights?
I'm confused

That is the 340B / 22 Hornet. You are correct, someone welded up all holes? Before I got it.
