Well so were we. Left NY 20 years ago and moved to WY and FL at the same time.
Now we have elderly family issues to deal with and must move to upstate FL.
Putting out "affordable" Key West house up for sale.
On a golf course, low taxes, low insurance as conforms with 1996 codes, gated community AND a good indoor range 15 minutes away.

Well that sounds like just the right place ...not for me! ;)
Golf courses usually frown on shooting of cast bullets!

That is a really nice house. Beautiful place, for sure.

I lived in Key West in the early 60s for a few years. Great place to be a kid, we did tons of
sailing, snorkeling, spearfishing, deep sea fishing, get all the shrimp you wanted with a net and
a bit of time, longusta BBQ whenever you were willing to spend the time getting them.

Good memories. Small town feel then, I could bike all over the island in safety. I suspect not
so much any more.

I hear the culture has been overrun with left coast crazies, though. I might not like it as much
as I used to in the laid back days that I remember.

Still, that is a really nice looking place.

What part of upstate Fla. I have family in N Central, tiny towns, and my wife inherited part
ownership in her parent's place on a small lake.

Key West is certainly not a Trump stronghold but there is a GOP club, lots of military active/retired. Most of us can't vote in local elections as we are residents elsewhere. What is hurting the town is the local Bubba's greed. Cruise ship scum and the desire to cover every square inch of land with buildings. I'm sure (unless the cat 5 comes) KW will look like Miami beach in 20 years. (OH I forget it will be 20' under water due to "climate change".)

at one time Key west was the population center of Florida.
then someone built a causeway and let the locals out, they couldn't keep their yaps shut.

Lot of nice lumber mills in NY.

One of the dumbest things I've ever done was visiting a brand new, state of the art mill in upstate and basically driving past the Redding factory. To make it even worse, the guy I was traveling with is a gun nut too?

OK,this is a bit X rated but hey..... I've been out killing stuff today?

The most "pot" I ever saw in one place was in upstate NY. Again, visiting a mill operation.... probably early 1980's. Anyway,we end up at this facility deep in the back woods and there's this mid 19th century huge arse barn. The owners of the mill were kinda snickering when they took us in this place. The WHOLE end wall was covered with hung up "weed". Think tractor trailer sized load..... that's when it became apparent that, hillbillies ain't a geographical thing?

Florida? A state becoming overrun with old people?

No way. Way too many people. Way too many old people. I will take lonely, cold plains for crowded, graying, beaches any day.

The price of KW real estate is always a shock to folks from rust belt states. Our HOA fees are among the lowest in KW. If you go on the web and look at KW prices, you would see what a bargain the Golf Club is. I have a friend renting in the "Old Steam Plant" condos. $10,000/ month of which $3000 is HOA dues. It's called "the price of paradise". 75 degrees, clear blue sky, tradewinds wafting in my door @5mph ------ just like Detroit eh ?

All depends on your definition of “paradise”. To many of us seclusion and privacy are key.
I am not interested in an HOA even existing where I live much less contributing to one.

Yup that's why I spend 6 mos here and 6 mos in NW WY. You can "have it all".

I'm with Brad.
I like a change of seasons and room for privacy.
I've got a in-laws that live in an exclusive golf/retirement community in Central Texas.
They have a HOA that he supports. Of course, he is on the HOA board.
Everyone has to get approval from the board to plant a tree, plant a bush, plant flowers in their flower beds, hang a banner from their porch or even set potted plants on their front porches. No exaggeration.
He says the HOA fees let him play any one of his three golf courses for a discounted fee. He just has to pay cart fees.
I tell him I've got fifteen golf courses within 30 minutes of me. I play three times a week for a yearly total of 1/5 of his annual HOA fees, not including the discounted fee.
No offence, I just view HOA fees as just another tax that you have to pay, so someone else can control everything you do.

Anyone who plays golf is beyond help. Millions of acres that could hunted or rifle ranges wasted so people can waste their lives chasing around a white ball on grass contaminated by over fertilization.

HOA s can be good or bad. Our's is okay. Provides 24/7/365 security, two nice pools, no loud parties, no homeless bums hanging around, no cars up on blocks, common area maintenance and ensures houses are maintained.

Even my "subdivision" in WY has covenants as WY has no zoning laws. Nothing like build a million $ log home and have a meth cooker trailer move in next door.

Shame Detroit/Seattle/Chicago/SanFran don't have HOAs.
