Took Elli out for the first time

Me and Elli went out hunting Monday for her first time, she was a trooper, it was 27 degrees with a 5 mph wind at 0630. She was doing everything right, talking quiet, moving slow, watching intently... well 3 hours pass and we hear some rustling behind us, we both turn slow and behold here is a big 4 point walking right to left about 75 yards out.

She was almost vibrating waiting for the shot, I set the sights of the K-31 on an opening he would step in, when he stepped into the sights I pulled the trigger. The buck didn't take another step, the bullet went in right behind the elbow joint on the left side and jellied a 4" circle of lungs and heart. She helped gut, skin, and quarter the deer. She wasn't squeamish about any parts of the operation. I have to say, I am one proud dad.

It just doesn't get much better than that. Bravo!

So, does she get to pull the trigger next year?

Oh yes, she will be 8 then and she will be shooting her 300 BLK, I hope we can tag her a few!

That's just to cool. I'll bet she will really enjoy the first dinner from her first hunt. How old is she?

You will love it when she gets her first deer.

Mine got hers at 13. It was a great day.

Well done Josh.

Congratulations Josh!!! That is spectacular.

Wait...that don't look like no cast bullet I ever heard of.:p

Sorry...couldn't resist.

Seriously congratulations though.

Her great-grandfather was taking a few of the pictures, he was as thrilled as me. He is the one who raised me, I owe everything to that man.

As far as using a jacketed bullet... I just didn't have time to make a load up. I have so much going on with the new house I haven't even broke out my reloading supplies!

Next year I will be hunting with cast, I promise!

Just wonderful, Josh! Raised both of mine just like this and now a grandson to train. So glad for you and Ellie!

We cooked up a loin today, rolled in a flour mix and fried in a cast iron skillet. She ate almost half of it by herself! Kept saying it was the "best deer we ever ate" there are some days I wish I could live over again and again. This week has been one so far.

That is so special, Josh, that memory will be with you forever.

I killed a couple bucks recently and had my two year-old grandson examining them and associating the animal with what he sees walking around the fields and the meat on the plate.

I remember years ago when times were hard trying to meet the mortgage, we saved every penny... no ice cream, beer, soda, etc. We finally had a few cents ahead and my wife bought beef steak to grill for my birthday. My seven year old son said "dad, what kind of meat is this, it tastes funny".

Good going, Josh!

We stretch our grocery dollar with deer, I receive between 3-7 deer a year from my family that doesn't need all the meat from their tags. I can't remember the last time we bought hamburger unless it was for actual hamburgers. From sausage to roasts to stew meat, deer is a staple in our family.

Any hunter involved in their community should know who could use some meat. Do it.
