Trevor ( my grandson ) shot several groups at 50 yards today with the 98 Mauser 7X57mm that you could cover with a nickel. The bullet was the Lyman 287448 ( sized to .2865 " ) with Hornady gas checks and 8.5 grs. of Unique with a large pistol primer. The nose of the cast bullet was lightly engraved when the bolt was closed.

We had a very enjoyable day.

How much does that bullet weigh? Is it a hunting bullet? I have a Winchester M70 in 7x57 that I have yet to develop a hunting load for. I tried paper patching, what a flop! I should stop trying difficult endeavours.

Well Ben you better start loading a whole lot more!
Love your videos of Trevor shooting!
He is cool as a cucumber behind that Trigger!
That says a lot for his mentor!!!
However ...We do not see much of your groups anymore!;)

That's awesome !

Take the opportunity to share a little history with Trevor concerning that cartridge. The development by Paul Mauser, the adoption by Spain, its use in the Spanish-American war, the second Boer war, its adoption by just about every country in central and south America and its widespread use as a hunting cartridge.
That cartridge is dripping with history. The 7mm Mauser (7 x 57) is one of my favorite cartridges.

My 7x57 mold is a Lee 6 cavity 130 gr flat nose gas check, a special of Midsouth Shooters Supply. That is a hunting bullet.

I take the phone pics of about 150% of what I want to show then crop them down in the phone app to what I wanted in the first place .

The 7 x 57 Mauser is a caliber I did the "Snooze and Lose" move with. I admire Paul Mauser's military and hunting calibers greatly, but didn't "move" on either a Ruger 77R or a CZ-550 example before they went out of production some years ago.

At 120 grs. and a round nose, I wouldn't hunt with it , if you are making reference to hunting white-tailed deer.

I wouldn't hesitate to kill one with this bullet however out of my 7X57mm :

I'm thinking that would be a perfect mold for my 7x57 chambered Garand....

Thanks for the smiles, Ben and Trevor.

If you want to hunt with 7mm either run it past 2500 fps or make Bruce B softpoints or drop a debrieded #4 buckshot pellet in the round-nosed mould before pouring the bullet with tougher alloy. Paper patching works well IF you squeeze the core down to .276" or so first, wrap wet and tight, and lube the patch after it is dry. Building a reduced powder load with a granulated buffer to bring the pressure back up also does wonders for top-velocity PP loads.

I got one of those when I got my 7x57 sporter and cast up 60 pounds of them. The first year I had the rifle, I shot a LOT of them off my front porch at 100 yards using ten grains of Green dot and then switching to ten grains of 700X when I ran out of Green Dot. Killed a decent doe with it that October during out early antlerless season using a hollow pointed Lyman 287308, about 165 grain bullet, worked fine, but I have since gotten one of the older style RCBS heavy 7mm molds now and I plan to use it with a cast soft now on deer next time.

I use the Lee Flat nose 130gr. (comes out at 135 gr. for me) for fire forming 7x30Waters cases from 30-30. Starting load of 748 PC and BLL (I tried it and it worked, no leading even with relatively soft alloy and 2200 fps. Why fix it if it "ain't" broke)

A professional ivory hunter, I believe Karamojo Bell, used the .275 Rigby to kill elephants. The .275 Rigby is the 7x57 Mauser by another name.

This is a recovered bullet from my 7x57 which went through almost three feet of deer. Shot was from maybe 50 yards from a tree stand, bullet entered in the left back strap (darn it, remind me to wait for better shot presentation) and ended up just under the hide on her brisket. The bullet started at 166 grains dressed and ended up at 77 grains afterwards.

My rifle has a long throat and I can seat that bullet out without anything below the neck of the case. I size all mine to .287. Load came from the RCBS cast manual, using 3031 and should have been a little over 1900 FPS.
