Thanks, Unc, but that "Got it" meant I deciphered fiver's post to mean .38-40 and .44-40.

But -- loud and long drum roll -- I'll be doing the paperwork tomorrow.

you'll like it.
I wish I hadn't of passed up the 66 in 45 colt when I had one thrown at me for 400$

.45 Colt or .44 Special would have been the cat's meow, but I'm happy enough with .38 Special.

I'll have to start a new thread looking for either .38 Special dies, or another set in .357 Mag.

I probably have three or four extra sets of RCBS steel .38 dies, good old ones. I'll get back to you tomorrow evening if you can wait. Pay postage and one of them is yours. If you need brass, I know someone looking to pass on a bunch of 1F wadcutter brass.

These modern cartridges like the 357 and 44 magnum don't do so well with black powder, poor seal and a lot of fouling blow back into the action.

I have never seen the 38 spl, .357, or 44 spl fail to seal with full loads of black powder, ever, hundreds of rounds. Now mouse fart smokeless loads, that's another story.

could be the powder.
I have some scheutzen brand that will let me shoot 40-50 rounds from my muzzle loader with just a grey ash in the barrel.
I'm down to about my last 1/2 lb.....

I have an Uberti 1866 24" in 45 Colt. Thousands of rounds thru it SASS shooting. Never a problem with the rifle, and lots of fun to shoot.

I have shot a borrowed 38 special version and it seemed just as good.
