It would be hard to get by without a 30-06 in the safe. I have done without a 308 for close to 30 years. At no time in my life since age 7 has there NOT been a 30/30 in my house.

Is five 30-30s too many?

Sounds more like "A good start" to me. I am kinda jonesing for one of Henry's single-shots in 30/30 currently. The build quality on my Henry steel-frame Big Boy in 357 Magnum is impressive, if the rest of their line follows suit they will sell a bunch of rifles.

Allen, if I didn't already have a pair of Savage 219s I would also be considering a Henry single-shot .30-30. Brass receiver would be my choice (I like the "bling"), and a tang sight of some sort would be neat even though the aperture would have to be about .100" for me to see through it.

OK, I got her back. (See pic) Mounted the 4X Weaver on it & tried it out. Took me more than I expected (loosing my touch) But had 4 left to see what kinda damage if any the other fella did to my baby. Looks like she still shoots the same load of jacketed anyway.

Got her soaking now & decided to order a neck expander. Never had one before cause .... I never needed it. I’m gonna go big & size .... maybe as large as .310 to see what happens. Especially with the slow cast stuff. Gun seems pretty solid in case I have to use it as a club if that Ol’RPM monster comes round. Note: more to follow.

This is your fault!

nice looking rifle.
I use .310 as a default 30 cal. diameter, it usually scuffs in the ball seat area and helps hold things a little straighter.

Ehhh. The interest for me is the bolt’s on the correct side & it launches slugs in such a fashion that they tend to cluster. The gun was purchased to build my first 35 Whelen. Problem was that it shot so well, everyone encouraged me to leave it alone. After I built my 2 - 35s, I lost interest in 30s, so I sold it. But this does fling cast in a repeatable fashion without being particular in requirements to accomplish it.

You had a rifle that shot very with cast and you SOLD it?

The 35s I built served a purpose. (Hunting) And I shot handgun mostly then. At one point, 10k rounds a year. Try molding, (actually was buying some too so I could post) loading, & shooting that much & see how much free time you have to post. I posted before to advance my knowledge base & help advance cast. I realized that in a way I was looking for “the answer” (science) that didn’t exist. As I went on, good results were as much accidents as pontificated theories. (Bassackward) When it got to be more folks telling me what I was experiencing wasn’t contributing, I decided to just shoot. :headbang: Knowledge base went down, results were all over the place, but fun sure did go up. So, I simplified my life, (sold stuff) to focus on what “I“ wanted. What’s the Nike saying, “Just do it!”.

I never heard of plastic coating, 300 BOs, or 300MP, so I can’t contribute much these days. I am in awe of the knowledge base here. So I do a lot of reading. :headscratch:

I totally understand the “shooting for fun” part. I also understand the casting and loading enough to shoot that much handgun in a year. When I got my first revolver I shot 200 rounds a week for 12 weeks in a row. All sized and lubed on a Lyman 450 and loaded on a single stage press. Between casting, sizing, and loading, it was a chore to get that all done and have a life outside of work. Good news is it drove me to get a Star and a Dillon which have saved me much time and frustration.

And everything we all experience adds to the knowledge base. It may not help a guy searching for a very specific answer but I guarantee that it helps someone.

Absolutely! Keeping good notes is an excellent way to learn. Over time as you go back over those notes you learn more from what you did that didn't work than from what did. Same with posting here, it may have been a back to the drawing board moment for you but somebody will pick up a little piece of knowledge from it.

Bass, I know I speak for at least a handful of us here. We missed you immensely not because you told us what to do but because you made us think.

I can remember asking you a few questions over there and I found I got answers that made me stop and think about what was happening and why. I wasn’t spoon fed and I wasn’t given such an obtuse answer that I was never gong to figure it out. What was given was enough information to help solve the problem and learn from it. You certainly added to MY database.

I learned a bunch when people told me “I don’t know, why don’t you try and it see what happens”. I quickly learned that until you pull the trigger on your gun with your loads that there are no absolutes.

Awwwwww, you're sweet. But I ain't adoptin ya. So knock it off.

I didn't tell ya what to do cause I read Six Guns by Keith. In it he told of how he lost credibility in the industry and almost lost his job when "he" loaded and SOLD his perfect bullet, outta perfect metal, with the perfect load and people complained that they leaded up the …. ahhhh …. pipe. :) If he didn't get "the absolute" right, what chance did I have?

Gear wrote up some "posts" for his, soon to be released, lifetime CB book, that'll make ya think.

Gear or Lan did a fair job with rifle bullet experience. I'm still waitin on the one about what happens to a revolver bullet when you pull the trigger & what THAT slug can experience on it's journey toward a successful launch. And how different that is & what can go wrong. :( Take …. the challenge, Lan!
