Same here, Matt, and the gun weighed something like 12 pounds so it could have been worse if it were lighter. I don't want to imagine an 8.

My dad would talk about hunting with 8's, way back in the day. I am assuming in the early 40's.

WOW. I have heard of them, never seen one, or even a good pic. Looks like
a handful of shoulder pain.

There's an old codger here in Zillah who has a very impressive Winchester collection that takes up a 20x20 room in the basement. He has a couple 8 ga guns. They are LARGE.

they used to use them to knock clinkers out of the cement rollers and such.
somewhere here I have an 8 gauge slug round that was for doing just that, airc the slug was around 600grs going about 1300 fps.

8 ga that round balls at 2oz each . Thats an 878gr ball at 1200 fps . Holy sheep !
On the others hand with an 1 1/2 oz load it's probably pretty docile in a 14# gun .

Definitely for someone younger than me.
My reconstructed shoulder would have to be reconstructed again after firing that with a full load!

The Migratory Bird Act of 1937 put an end to waterfowl hunting with any gauge larger than 10 gauge. That's FedReg. Most states aligned their resident game laws to comport with that standard soon afterward. On CA State waterfowl areas, 12 gauge is as large as you can go, and the 3-1/2" Magnum with non-toxic shot is the standard for whacking quacks.

I have no experience in shooting an 8 gauge shotgun, and no interest in acquiring same. I do have a 10 gauge shotgun, and it has gone along on turkey hunts with me in years past before the coyotes killed off all of the local wild birds. That old 10 bore might get a trip or two this Spring, as I have located a decent flock or two not real far away. I love getting "gobble-backs" to my calling.
