Vihtavouri primers!

I'm sitting on plenty of stuff like a lot of us. However, because the inner "squeak" in me knows cost of replacement right now, it kinda sucks the fun out of volume shooting. I'm not interested in recharging primers or caps. When life is giving you lemons, make lemonade: Shoot the flint locks! I have plenty of chert just for walking outside and can knap a serviceable gun flint. I also have the means to produce proper charcoal, and the other two ingredients I can get at the feed store. Powder for less than $5/pound and free primers litter the ground. Lead balls can be trapped and used over and over again. Less supporting equipment than PCP guns and a lot classier IMO. Anyway, I'm having fun and the current continuing shortage/gouging state of metallic cartridge reloading components has pushed me to get involved in something I always wanted to do anyway. Percussion black powder stuff is okay and I have a few pistols and a rifle, but the dang caps are more flighty than primers (no military or commercial ammunition demand for them, ya know) and all the twitchy doomers grab them up every time anything at all happens that they perceive is the end of whatever. Never did much with flinters before and now's my chance to really focus on it. Supplies are cheap and readily available, but holy crap have you priced guns lately? That's ok, it's an "investment". At least that's what I tell my wife....

You know, Ian, I have a flintlock that I have not shot very much but am going to this year. My friends have lots of powder, and if I shoot 25 times in an afternoon, that is enough. Oh, and I can shoot 22LR in my single shot rifle and use up some of the bricks of Thunderbolt ammo in the 50 caliber ammo cans. Shooting at shotgun hulls at 25 yards was fun when I was a kid 60 years ago.

I know I'm old and cranky and hate change, but dang man! We went through what? 2-3 years where you couldn't even get 22's and then you could only get 1 box of 50 and they wanted $10.00 or more. Now it's primers, powder and brass! Looking back, we went through the Golden Age of reloading and didn't even know it!

As a consumer, I am not POWERLESS. I am not a pawn at the mercy of sellers. I am not the “little man” that has no choice but accept what the seller demands.

I, and I alone, have the authority to decide on purchases I make. I can decide if I’m willing to pay a particular price or even if I want to make a purchase at all.

and there's a lot of us out there saying don't pay the stupid prices.
2 minutes later 'someone' comes along and says i'm old and cranky,, i'll pay whatever to keep on shooting.

Outside of a couple boxes of Short HP for trapping/barn work I didn't pay the price, that's why I haven't been shooting!

And therein lies the rub.

I picked up a basket of flint in AZ when down there for my cousins wedding. Have been wanting to do exactly what you are doing but like you said, the prices of flinters have gone UP! I don’t need a top end rifle, just a capable one. Maybe a trade rifle…

Not buying anything till prices hit the reasonable level. I know that's not gonna be the old price but under $50 per 1000 anyway. I got enough of everything to last till I'm four hundred years old if I never buy anything else but If prices get reasonable I'll buy more just like I always have. Gotta think about the son's and any grandkids I might yet end up with. Besides, primers I bought for $2.00 a thousand in the 60's and still have most of
are worth $100 per right now.

PS: Anybody have contact info for Chris ? I have his address in Long Lake but have misplaced his phone number , least I think I had it . Pm worked in November but sent him a couple since with no response. Kinda worried about him as he usually answers right back.

SR 4759 can. He hasn't posted in quite a while but was answering PM's till right before Christmas. Was hoping someone had his digits or was close enough to know if he's alright. Probably just hasn't been on the computer to see the PM's I sent but you never know. like me, he ain't young.
