What are the best brass cases?

I've had great luck with Starline and never a problem. As uniform as mass production can be expected to be, they are fairly uniform in weight and primer pocket depth.

I like Remington & Norma.

They anneal their brass, more expensive then some brands that reduce cost by NOT annealing their brass.

confused-small.pngALL brass is annealed during manufacture. Would not be possible to make it without annealing. The difference is that some brass is tumbled after annealing, other brass, military comes to mind first is never tumbled after annealing and the anneal is quite visible.

I've a big box of Winchester once fired brass that I bought from a gent on the castbullets site. Plus a bunch of once fired brass from Remington, Federal and of course Winchester. So guess I'm set for awhile. Range pickups around here are mostly once fired as I don't know anyone who reloads for this caliber. All sorted by headstamp and if fired in one of my 30-30's that gets noted on the freezer bag that they're in. Frank

I have a hundred or so R-P cases that are satisfactory. My thinking that I want to get a different brand now because if I get more R-P cases I will have a hard time keeping the lots separated. A different headstamp would keep them separate. I like Lapua and Nosler because of their consistency and the prep that is already done to them, but I can't find those brands (Norma either) in 30-30 Winchester at any of my normal sources.

I can find Starline which is what I use in my pistol calibers. I can find W-W, R-P, FC, and PP. I have read in the gun rags that Privi Partizan brass is good. Probably cheaper too.

Free, once-fired ones are usually "best". Highest-quality .30-30? Federal or Remington has done well for me. I don't much care for Winchester in ANY caliber.

I've had no problems with Prvi Partizan brass.
I had to buy their 7.65X53 ammo to get brass for the '91 Argentine, but its accuracy left much to be desired.
I use both their PP and NNY headstamps for the Swede.

I only use Winchester in hunting loads for my brothers and friends, because Dad always bought Winchester ammo and we had a lot of OFB.
Having said that, I made several hundred cases from PP .223 brass for my 7.62X40 WT and they are a lot thicker than LC brass.
So much so, that I had to neck ream all of the PP brass to fit the 7.62x40 chamber.
I actually had some rounds that stuck while trying to chambering.
Just relaying the story, because it may reflect a revision in load data for the heavier brass if you go with the PP.

Well at least if I use "Free once fired" I won't have to worry about keeping lots separate. LOL ;)

For most rifle calibers I’ll use Starline if I can. For my extreme long range shooting with the .338 Lapua I use Lapua brass.

My least favorite is Hornady....In 30-30 I like R-P Winchester and Federal
In most other calibers that are range pick I really like PMC when I find them! I find that those cases weigh in about 1 to 2 grain difference between cases and that impresses me and they last a good long time If you anneal them every 12 shootings or so

I got 200 once-fired PMC cases from another Cowboy Shooter about 15yrs ago. When the REM-UMC .32 Win Spl that I necked down for cast loads in .30-30 wear out, I'll have those to fall back on. at least 8 loadings of those ancient cases so far, but they are just light plinking loads. They may outlast me.
I've had good luck with PMC in .243, .30-06 & .223

Now that's funny! I'm not picking on you Ian, but Federal rifle brass is at the bottom of my list, with Remington just above it. Why is it funny? because we're exact opposites this time. :)

Win is garbage. Fed depends on which caliber. Rem 223 is what I like the best for 223. 45acp I like S&B. 9mm anything without a crimp. 9mm Win go in scrap bucket same as 223

chuckle.
I not only have brass likes and dislikes I have them within each caliber.
my 340=A dotes on Remington brass.
my lever rifles seem to prefer Winchester, not just for group size but for extraction too.

I use only Federal cases in my Bergara 0-6 so far, Win in my 03A3, Rem in the 1917 and wife's Savage.
the stag 6-H in 223 shoots best with PMC, but also likes Federal cases when I can find them.
my 7 ICL is a big fan of Remington cases, and the tang safety Ruger [in 7X57] is completely happy with Winchester 257+p cases.
I could go on.

Starline for handgun. Period.
For HP I used Win 223 brass exclusively. I sorted by neck thickness variation in a few places on the neck. Never had trouble getting 300+ cases per K with under .001 variation to use at 600
