What Did You Shoot Today?

One of the first things I did, when relocated to Arkansas 12 years ago, was put in a large powder order from Powder Valley. Part of that order was an 8# jug of AA 2520. Still haven't opened it................... haven't shot any jacketed stuff in probably 30 years. AA 2520 must be loaded to pretty much fill the case, so it's not that cast friendly. It might be OK, if one powder coats their bullets and uses jacketed data.

Went plinking on Sunday... took my trusty Mossberg (44us via cmp), and a ruger mk3 with ultradot to pop steel at distance. Others brought ultrapimped ar toys and other wackadoodle... lever gun with rails/etc. One of the older gents, really liked my $75 cmp after trying a few rounds thru it. I had plenty of fun trying the toys that others brought. Had one of the youngings work thru the 22s and they all had a lot of fun! I enjoy that the next gen is having fun with the older wood and steel.

Took the wife's uncle to the range today.
Took his 40 caliber G23. 1970's SW 629 .44.
My 10 mm High Point Yeet pistol. My sons 1911.
Also took my .450 Bushmaster AR 15 .
His choice.
Only .40 to .45 shot today.
Odd for me...No .356 ish size bullets were shot today.
Only pop cans, and 2 liters were harmed today
Had fun. Think he liked the High Point the best, by the smile per gun ratio. But he won't admit it.
He is taking a nap now and headed back to Kentucky, in a couple hours. He and his other likes driving at night.

I used ta like overnite driving. Still would ceptin every third or fourth azzhat leaves high beams on. Its bad enough todays cars have such brite LED lights. I think folks in older cars feel there less bright lights are inadequate so they just leave highs on...

A buddy of my son left his Hipoint .45 carbine here for me to check out. It has a cheap Red/Blue/Green dot sight on it. I was unimpressed with the accuracy so I mounted a Weaver K1.5 on it and tried it. Still unimpressed.
It is reliable, at one point shooting a mix of SWC, TC, and RN in the same mag.
I’m shooting up some 230 gr PC RN “warmish” loads to get rid of them, but 6”@40 yards from a rest is barely home defense accuracy if that.
This one has clips that hold it together; bolts and nuts might be better but it’s not mine so there it is….
To get over that, I shot my Topper/Tikka .256 W and put five 75 gr hp bullets into an inch @ 40yards.

Sunny and 58 here. But still a lot of dampness hanging in the air.
Testing some 40 caliber brass based loads today. For the 10mm.

When I get done working up those, on to 10.

My 10,,,aa7 is the ultimate,,pure speed, and very tight groups.
Mp 158hp,,is by far the most accurate

I shot the 44-40 with (ahem) 200 gr JHP bullets over 10 grs Unique……excellent.
I’ve returned the 38-55 to the Redfield peep sight and using the same bit of Unique….. great.
Tested a recent LGS rescue 3x9 Redfield Widefield scope($20!) on the 7-30 Waters with the same scoop of Unique and mystery 155 gr cast…..fantastic.
Shot the .50 CVA Bobcat with Burris FF3 and 70 grs FFFG/ patched round ball…..ok.
Shot 40 rounds of +P .45 ACP 230 gr PC RN through a perfectly reliable paper plate accurate Hipoint .45 carbine….. glad to be rid of those!
All at 40 yards.
At ten yards I shot rapid DA groups from the TauRossi .38 Snubby, the Taurus PT22, and the Colt OP .38 OP…… not bad but practice will help!
Shooting the Holy Black made me wish that I could smell itIMG_2884.jpegIMG_2897.jpeg

The Bobcats are cute little rifles. I'm not much into halfstocks or capguns but if I saw one on a gunshow table fore a sane price it might come home with me.

I tested homemade black powder all afternoon with my Kibler southern mountain rifle. Not a lot of fun having to mount/demount the MagnetoSpeed bayonet for reloading but I'm getting better at it. Beat the 6" gong mercilessly at 50 yards and determined that Jake's Cottonelle 77/13/10 recipe is still 150 fps slower than his when I make it. Within 25 fps of old GOEX and my black willow 75/15/10 but is cleaner and produces noticeably less smoke. I'm okay with it being a touch slower than GOEX and clean with soft fouling because I'm working up a formula for cartridge powder that won't dislocate my retinas.

High Point 5.25" barrel Yeet Cannon. 10mm pistol.
Pretty much been working my way around different bullet designs. Thanks to CW. Kinda figured the 401 175tc is going to be my go to for 10mm and 40sw. Done got the mould off Jon.

But still wanting to use up all those samples that CW sent me, plus this crap load of Longshot Powder I have.

So starting with the 145grain SWC. Figure since they are lighter I will just load all those in 40 SW.
Started at 7 grain of long shot. "2 group at 21 ft. But cycling issues. Issues went away but group opened up at 7.4 grain.
Got group tighter at 7.6 grain. About 2.5".
I started getting some 1 inch groups, but Keyholes and slightly over flattened primers at 8 grain. Weird never had a bullet key hole from shooting faster before.
So figure I will just load up the hundred or so in 40 SW cases with 7.8 grain of Longshot. Then use them for 7 to 25 yard practice loads.

Emmett, all I used in the .40 was the Lee 175 TC and Longshot, it's a great combination and should be just as great in the 10mm.

I played with it some in both calibers.
Good results but still need to take time and find tune the loads.
Will be getting into a massive casting session with that mould soon.
So after I get the rest of the Bullets CW sent me loaded up.
It will probably be my main stay. I may end up picking one other design also. After I get done working up the rest of CWs bullets.

But the 175's have impressed me the most, so far. In both 10 and 40.
Same gun with both Longshot and W 231.

Started on the pistol range with my CZ SP01 with the 40 top end on it. Load was the Lee 180gr TC with 3.1gr of WST (716fps). Practiced indexing from target to target, then took a sharpie and drew a 6" circle to check my POI when swinging the gun left and right breaking a shot each time I crossed it. My normal sight picture is holding the lower 1/3 of the plate, hoping to center my hits. Results look like my pattern is about 2" lower than I want to be.

After the pistol range I went down to the rifle range and shot the Rem 722 in 300BO. I just had everything apart for blueing and it looks like the POI shifted up about an inch. Today I shot the Lyman 311465 (129gr) and the Saeco 315 (178gr), both with 12.5gr of WC820. Targets are 15 rounds each. Nothing spectacular, I needed to get to work so i was rushing my shots a bit. The 311465 probably needs more powder (and a focused shooter). Still plenty of things to play with in the 300.

I had time while the Mule battery charged up; so I tried out my “new” 7x57 Oviedo/ Remington with the 145 gr RCBS bullet in necked up 6mm Remington brass. 12 grs of Unique with Ginex LRP.
At 40 yards from the bags; it’s not bad. I also shot three rounds from sitting @100 yards with 145 gr btsp over N203B - minute of coyote!
