What Did You Shoot Today?

Took the wife to shoot my new DW 1911. With a little coaching on a new grip she shot pretty damned well. The trigger is light enough that a couple went before she was ready.
I hope it doesn’t cost me a handgun.

Shot about 70 rounds through a .22 Contender today after mounting a scope. Those things are little rifles, that's what they are.

You are doing much better than I ever did. Neither of mine would group better than 3 inches at 50 yards.

Really? Holy cow, every one of them I ever shot has been excellent. This .22 shoots splendidly and the .357 Herrett is responding very well to cast. I'll admit, I have not put them on paper and measured groups, but on fresh painted gongs and silhouettes you can see your impacts and I am very impressed.Years ago I had a Super 14 .30-30 that shot Hornady single shot pistol 135 grain jacketed better than any other .30-30 I ever shot.

Have 4 Contenders. The 7-30 Waters and 223 both do 1"/100 yds easy. Yet to get the 30 or 357 Herretts up and running.

L Ross - care to share your 357 Herrett cast loads?

My Contender carbine with factory 22 Hornet barrel will put 40gr Nosler Spitzers and 37 gr. Calhoun HP's into .75 MOA for 5 shot groups at 100yds. Much to the dismay of a couple of Ruger bolt guys at the range who struggle to keep 2 MOA with the Hornet. My Bullberry 7x30 Waters barrel is MOA with a 120 Nosler SP or 130 Speer. I like being able to use spitzers in the Waters. I never shot the 22LR barrel for groups but it is minute of squirrel at 50 yds.
The ergonomics of the Contender leave something to be desired (I am not a fan of the effort it takes to open them and the system of cocking/recocking that requires breaking the action open) but mine is a handy, light weight and accurate hunting rifle.

So far all I have tried is the load Charlie has been using. 10.0 grains of Unique under a RCBS 35-200-FN and the semi pointed 215 grain bullet from a no name mould I have. Charlie is coming over this weekend and I plan on setting up the chronograph and see what's up with that. From that starting point I can decide what if anything I want to change. The Unique load reaches the 210 yard rail and has yet to fail to topple a buffalo silhouette even with a leg hit. I sorta hope it is reaching 1,200 fps, if so I may just stay with it. What's not to like? 700 loads per pound and knocks down steel. Recoil is very tolerable with enough muzzle flip to feel like you're shootin' sumptin'.

Today was go to the club and get some sight/scope settings.

When I shot my 52C with the 10X Unertl last week, the front mount was loose. I fixed that on Monday, but wanted to try my 15X Lyman STS on the rifle. So, that was job one and got sight settings out to 300 yds and still have a tiny bit of room before the scope end bell hits the barrel.

Next was my .22 Low Wall. This is an original gun that I had sleeved and a match chamber cut. We shoot .22 BPCRA at the club on 2 Saturdays/month and turnout has been improving. Now that we are back from camp, I want to at least give it a try. I have not drilled and tapped the rifle for a scope yet. So will be shooting it with iron sights. I'm using the long range Soule rear sight that was on my Shiloh. It's a tad long for a .22. But it works. Boy those .22 BPCRA targets are small. Chickens, which are shot offhand at 50 meters are smaller than a pack of Camel straights. The other target are not very big either. Got some settings so good to go if I want to shoot this Saturday. 100, 150 and 200 mts are shot off sticks, prone. Everyone says it is a scoped rifle game. I have a 438 Lyman I've already de-clicked just for this match. Just need to drill and tap the rifle for blocks. But will shoot a match or two with irons to see if my back like shooting prone. It was not crazy about it when I shot F-class. We'll see.

Yesterday was pure relaxation. I have a much loved, but cantankerous Weaver K-10 scope that I had apart for inspection. I mounted it on a Savage MkII FV because it was the easiest to do so. 100 rounds later the old Weaver was still behaving itself and the Savage was putting lots of little round hole, 5 shot groups in the target. It liked the Wolf ammo I had. And I liked a warm, sunny afternoon at the range. I just hope the old Weaver had as good a time.

The IMR 4895 group measures .429" East/West and .543 North/South and I'm very pleased with it, but I'll do some load tweaking anyway.

Yep, it was a happy session.

Got any RE-15? Great powder in 223 with the heavier bullets.

By the way, except for the Varget target 2 group, all the others under MOA.

that CFE-223 load looks like it has some potential too.

I have 2 1/2 pounds of IMR 4895, so will use it for tweaking. CFE 223 and Varget are used for accuracy loads with the 68 and 69-grainers, but their containers are all but almost empty. I've only seen ReLoder 15 on Internet sellers' sites. I'm waiting for Powder Valley to have CFE 223, Varget and BL-C(2) in stock all at the same time, to place an order. Hen's teeth are more common, round here, than gun stores that cater to handloaders' needs, so I'm forced to rely on Powder Valley, though lately MidSouth's assortment has been better.

Powder Valley's prices are much better than LGS around here,if you can even find what you're looking for.........HazMat included. Our sales tax is almost 10 percent. Rare to find an 8# jug of anything, too.

had to go do a little 'backyard' trap shooting with the in-laws this afternoon.
handed the nephew a 7gal. bucket of 12ga. shells i wanted to shoot up and toss.
he set them by the door and left them there when we left.
i was forced to scrounge around in the Bronco and could only come up with about 60 shells.
felt like a piker.

Today was out VT Match. 6 MOA round discs at 100, 150, 200 and 300 with an a 2 shot offhand meerkat at 400. Conditions were great. Wind was changing, but pretty readable.

When the match was over, several of us decided we need to make the targets smaller. My thought was to bump out the targets to the next distance and then add a smaller target for 100 yds. I think that is what will happen. Two of us shot perfect scores and there a few more 39's. The point made was if you are pissed because you don't shoot a perfect score, the targets are too big. If it's not hard, it's not fun. Plus, you don't learn anything if it is not a challenge and learning is one of the best parts of competing.

I shot .22 lr Contender, S&W Model 15 in .38 spl., .44 w.c.f. with 35 grains of KIK 2fg and the Big Lube bullets in a Cimarron SAA clone, and my Kidd 10-22. The .44-40 helped my handgun flinch come back.Shot .357 Herrett in Contender yesterday.
