What Did You Shoot Today?

Ric,
I recall, now, you mentioning that load before. Okay, I'll try it before I start on that rainy day project. Besides, there's not the slightest bit of rain in the 10-day guess.

24/2400/405 is pretty much the gold standard for smokeless 45/70 Gov't ammunition. That extra 2/10" does make a difference, though. I need to rummage in the magazine and find a few pounds of something that needs to be used up.

Replaced the scope on my 22 after the old one would not adjust for windage. Took some recently produced bulk pack ammo out to get close and then fine tune with what it likes best (again in my world the stuff is no longer in production). Pretty pathetic, 3/4"at 25 off the bench, phht, vs 1/4" with my trusty Aussie Power Points, most accurate hunting stuff I have ever shot, and text book perfect expansion. Sure can notice a difference when the trigger pulled, report and increase in what little felt recoil there is.

A Beautiful 27º sunny breezy day
(you can see the red range flag waving in the wind and the empty parking lot, in this first photo).

Another outing with the JM625 and a coffee can of ammo.
This is the second shooting session with the Thailand conversion grips.
the first one wasn't impressive. Today, they felt much better, even though
I was blasting up some different lots of older ammo, various bullet styles,
various powder charges, and various lubes.

Half the Ammo was bullets lubed with Tamarack (NRA 50-50), so things got greasy.

I've never used gloves when shooting, ever!
In cold weather, I usually just tough it out bare handed, until my fingers are too cold for shooting.
I brought these insulated work gloves and I'd have to say they worked well with the moons.
I think I will make this my usual winter gun...very glove friendly.

Hey wait, How'd that one get in there, LOL

Also, I forgot my prescription shooting glasses. While I am right eye dominant, I have astigmatism
in that eye. If I close the right eye, my left eye will focus pretty good on the front site, but the
using the Glasses is much better. But since I was just burning up ammo, I went without and did OK.

All in all, a fun day at the range. I didn't expect cloverleafs with the multi-flavored ammo and
lack of glasses. I just put all the ammo into the same two targets and most of 'em hit the paper.

So, I went to the range again yesterday (Tuesday).
The Sun was out, it was 42º, and a light breeze.
Dang near Tee shirt weather for January in MN.

Shooting ammo all from same batch.
a load of Unique pushing a Lee 452-230-TC that was tumbled with 45-45-10, sized to .452,
them tumbled a second time with BLL.

The bullets were hitting where I was aiming. I couldn't have been happier.
After shooting about 120 rds, I noticed a large quantity of tiny black specs
in front of me, in the fresh snow (smokeless powder kernels).

Sometimes, I am able to recover some bullets, some days not so much.
Shooting into the wooden pistol pit backstop, some days, she lets loose
of a bunch of lead, some days she holds on to them.
TODAY, I recovered about a soup can full. Some were still warm.
I noticed some had some voids in the base. All shown (but one) were from today's shooting
the other was a SWC. I swear I cull every bullet I see with a void in the base.
Can I assume I these were hidden voids? Is my sorting/culling ability lacking?
4 of those was from today's shooting of 120 rds...that's some crappy percentages.
BUT, I was happy enough with the targets, so I guess it doesn't matter?

I added this view, as I wanted to show the side nearest the void, looking for gas escape holes. I didn't see any, but took
the photo, cuz sometimes you can see more with a digital photo, than the eye.

Match last night...

Its been too cold for outside range. So we went early (indoor ranges)

I had mounted a couple reflex dots in a MKII & 10/22 Ruger. So we sited them. Then shot our match. With our Benelli pistols.

When I started shooting 45/70 in matches, that is why I went back to ladle pouring in the 1990's. Wasn't good enough to get the bottom pour rate to have bases without hidden voids.
splash over against the sprue plate.

i've had linotype ingots [pigs] with holes in them before from that happening, and they are open top molds.

New G20 with 357 Sig bbl. What a hoot! Minimal muzzle flip and recoil straight back. Used up some odds and ends, de-cluttering so to speak.

In reading Jon's post above, think he needs to start weighing all of his bullets and cull those puppies out........ and send them to me. I will be happy to remelt and cast in to something else just too make sure there is nothing wrong with his alloy.

Jon, do a couple of those primers look like they leaked?

Why do I suspect that rifle didn't look quite so Winchesterish when it came from the factory? That's nice!
Thank you sir.

It's my understanding, EMF (Early and Modern Firearms) gave Rossi its own set criteria as to the finished product, one of which was the choice of wood. Either EMF supplied the wood, or Rossi upgraded it from the typical Brazilian mystery hardwood. Whatever, and either way . . .

I bought the rifle used, so it shows some character. My only modifications are the removal of the
semi-buckhorn rear sight, its replacement with a Marble's tang sight and a Brownells dovetail blank to fill the slot, the removal of a turn or two of the ejector spring, and a very slight bit of trigger/sear polishing, thought a rough spot remains.

Yes, that's why I put them in the photo. I seem to have a batch of R+P brass that seem to have enlarged primer pockets (these were all loaded with Winchester primers). The Previous outing at the range (the day before) I shot a couple hundred rounds of ammo, but it all wasn't that R+P batch, but some were and I get at least 20% leakers.

I've been keeping these spent rounds separate for my next time reloading a batch. I have 1100 vintage Herter's primers that are oversized enough, that they won't seat properly in any brand brass I've tried. So, I plan to see how they feel went seating in these loosey goosey batch of R+P, to see if I give this batch of brass one more time around, or just retire them. I hate to retire any R+P brass, as they fit my "ranch products" moon clips, every other brand of brass fit overly tight.

Shot OK last night...

600 match 281 & 283. Dropped two bullets out of the blk in slow. Then a 98 Rapid with 8x and last shot jerked a 8!!!
