What do I need...

I have a Mauser 98 with a 6mm Rem barrel I'm trying to set up for a coyote rifle for Gordy. I know the whole story on the 244 Rem/243 Win but I've also run into a lot of people that were perfectly happy with the 244/6mm. Honestly, the 6mm doesn't spin my propeller much, I find the 25 fascinating and the 6.5 far more versatile. But I have the rifle, he needs one, and the 6mm is a skinny 257 R, so it can't be all bad.

Any idea why the primers are stuck? Bad decap rod? If the end gets jagged they will do that sometimes.

It was from decaping when I started the brass prep. I have seen the cap ripped off leaving the sides if the primer. But have not had the pin blow thru like this. Usually this would lock vase in shell holder. But its a Frankfort press with a universal shell holder.

I agree the 6.5 it alot more versatile able to shoot almost same weight bullets more efficiently while also sending heavier better designed bullets as well.

Its just one of those itches that needs scratched. (6mm Rem) One thing I will change is the rifling twist. I will get a bit faster. Generally the 6mm is 1:9 or 1:9.5. Ill choose 1:8. Altho the 243's 1:10 never showed issue with Speer 105's for me in two different rifles... A number of good bullets are being made to 115g now. Knowing that ya cannot over stabulize a bullet, Ill aire on the positive side.

This will be a hunting first, shooting second rifle for me.

On page 2 someone mentioned "the head space issue with the 375-06" (Whelen).
We have been shooting one for well over 1000 rounds. We have never had any "Headspace" issue. This is another of those "Gun Tales" the mis-informed and probably never owned one individuals have passed on and on and....
Friends who own these fine chamberings and myself still await any documented evidence of a reloader who uses proper dies to display a real issue. Do you really think Col. Whelen and other expert rifle builders would put their approval on a development that was dangerous ?

I did read of a feller who took took a reamer to a 30-06 sizer and opened only the neck thinking this would work to "resize 375-06 brass'. But 375-06 shoulder is wider in diameter than the 06 which tapers from the head to the neck far more. So yea he had an issue and blamed the cartridge.

IMHO, these "headspace" claims/issues stem from overly soft, Remington brass and a 35 Remington caliber. I have had this happen in a few of my guns. (Using factory loaded REMINGTON ammo) I never saw this in my hand loads. But likely all of us have bought and witnessed new Remington brass where narly a single piece has a round neck.
Simply carried to the Whelen and then to its offspring as a simple assumption.

I've always LOVED loading new bottleneck Remington brass cases. Just shove those needle neck pliers into the neck to round out the case mouth and you're on your way.
I neck up all new brass to one caliber over. And then partially neck size down until the bolt just barely closes. This adjusts the sizing for perfect headspace. After that 1st firing the headspace is perfect for that rifle. Which I guess is why I have 5 die sets for. 30-06.

I think it stems from back in the day before standardized drawings and specs. I bet someone, several someones, had a rifle with a slightly long chamber and dies with a slightly short shoulder. Or maybe it was a fat shoulder in the chamber and thin in the die. Either way, with nothing to hold the base against the bolt face- "click" and no "boom!". Once it was in print it was "fact"! Probably the same guys loaded an undersized cast bullet into a jacket fouled rifle and used full bore loads and turned their barrel into a sewer pipe of leading. More "fact"/myth.

WOOHOO SCORE!!!

I was talking with my friend again yesterday. He reminded me of another friend we have with a shop down near the NY line. We planed on a trip today. Stopped to pick him up @ 10, but he said it was too cold for him and the nerve pain was bad today. (He is a vet who lost a arm along with extensive damage to other arm chest and abdomen. Many grafts and cold just hurts him.) So I went alone. I was rewarded with most all I wanted and more than I coulda hoped for!!
He did indeed have 5/6 boxed of "used" bullets. All opened but most appear near full. I grabbed all of them and headed to the brass shelves. WOW!! There was 8 brand new old again "used" Remington 6mm Brass factory raw brass boxes. 5$ ea.

I asked if he mind I bought all of them? He said you buy all of anything you want kiddo! (Love that!) Ill give you a deal, its been there too long!
This man always has great stories and is a very accomplished Trap shooter with many awards and very high rankings.
So I had 8 box of brass and 5 or so boxes of bullets. For you kiddo 55$

Back in the truck I opened a box with my cheaters and was rewarded with PRIMED BRASS!! :p:p:p

Yes it is!!! Thats about 45 50minutes from
Me on the shore.

This project has only just begun!! Its gonna stumble along for a couple months here. Need to allocate 500 ish for the barrel.
So Ill make up some light bullet break in rounds. Cant load any "good stuff" till I have a chambered mounted barrel.

Fully prepped all the brass I had the other day. I have a friend on another fourum sending me a bag of range brass he has. (Sold rifle) so Ill have all that to prep too.
Gonna watch for more heavy bullets but Im stacked with light ones! These New Rem brass will only need run expander ball thru necks to load. Ill save them for "real" loads.

Friend up here is originally from Ct. He talks about his boyhood days when Ct was all farms and woods. Lots of deer hunting and trapping. He's pushing 80, so it was a while ago! Another farmer moved here some time back from New Britain. Left the machinist trade to milk a real nice heard of Jerseys. He brought a crapload of very nice iron with him, a 16x72" Leblond included that I lusted after. The Amish ended up with most of it when the taxes and milk prices drove him back into the machine shop someplace else.

I got a email back from this Barrel Maker.
They will throat the barrel for what ever I like for no extra charges.

Turn around is running about 7-8weeks today. Advertised as 8-10.

Im waiting for a Sheridan gauge and Ill make up dummies and get the action stripped. They want no scope or mounts & no trigger. Just barrel action and bolt. Ill have this shipped out to them next week.

Today, I pulled 60-70 cartridges sent to me for shipping cost. Lost 15-20 to. Racked necks. One to completely separated neck and two to primer tops punched out. Was left with exactly 50 cases.

As I got into these the powder in most was damp. All primers corroded looking. The bullets in all was 85g hpbt.
I trimmed all cases, then deburred, mouths and flash holes. Then cleaned-uniformed pockets. Then annealed and lastly washed them. OMG a 1/4 tsp lemi shine and two pumps hand doap with a pint HOT water has that brass VERY clean in ten minutes!!!
