Bottom portion is .90 in diameter, upper portion is .54. Hole in bottom is threaded 8-32.

What is the steel? Tool steel, mild steel, etc.
Also is the threaded hole blind, or does it pass through the entire length of the widget?

Threaded hole is blind. Hole could have been drill clear thru but no need. Made these from 12L14, could have used 1018 just as well.
Hole end of smaller diameter section was for a center, no other purpose for it to be there.

So which end is the bottom?
The one not the top.

Larger end goes down. Hole in smaller end is where I had a center while turning the part. It doesn't hurt anything so I left it.

How about wall pegs for rifles to hang on.
Very close.
Pegs to hold Dillon 550 shell plates. They will be screwed to a board cut to fit in the bottom of a plastic bin. Lid keeps the dust off. I was keeping them in a drawer but they were rattling around and the drawer was getting crowded.

I have about half a dozen from Dillon, on a base with slots for the shell holder and pins.
Very handy, but mine are out, exposed to dust.
