To be honest I had very low expectitations,HOWEVER I was pleasently surprised by the results 100 yds 1" target EDIT THIS WAS THE NOE 198 GRAIN 311 365 SPIRE POINT

I'm restricted to point bullets in my Armalite AR-10..............nothing else will feed at 100% reliability.

NOE's 311414 (160 grain)

100% stock carbine. Didn't opt for the National Match trigger. For accuracy work, it wears a 6 x 24 Burris Signature.

Otherwise, its a Trijicon Reflex, with 1 MOA dot.

I also have the NOE 198 grain spire point......311365 IIRC. However, I couldn't get that one to shoot. :sigh:

Both of the aforementioned spire points are not to be found on NOE's website. I have a couple of Al's 9 mm molds that are incognito, too. :headbang:

WineLover 31-165 any version works great in my 308W AR10 DPMS. MOA @ 200 but 6" drop. The flat nose feeds fine and is good for hunting. IIRC Fiver came up with the design. I get lost trying to figure the OLD mould numbers, size and weight with modifier is much easier.

I don't understand Al's mold number designation changes. confused.pngUnless, it's a marketing ploy.

Be that what it may, IMO, 200 grains is a bit much in the 308W.............better for the 30/06.

Most of the numbers now are dia-weight-nose some have a suffix where a particular design may have variations . A small handful of "direct copies" may retain the Lyman/Ideal numbers but are marked dia-weight-nose .
I don't know off hand if my 301618 is marked that way or 301-172 , the 458132 is marked 460-543 RN , it's actually a Postell and casts .460-535 . The .311-165 RD is the Ranch Dog Marlin WFN but I don't see the RD designs listed anymore . The ever popular 22-55 was a generalized blending I think of the Lee and RCBS versions but at 62 gr mine is an older mould marked 225-55 FP the new moulds are marked 225-62 FP .

I don't know what happened but I suspect they got big enough to make a noticable splash in RCBS and Lymans , maybe Lee also , to get a legal notice about intellectual property or patent infringement regarding numbers and shapes of current production moulds . I think it was 4-4.5 yr ago that they did a big renumber thing .

Great shooting, Quicksylver!

I don't own this bullet, but I actually have a top punch for the NOE 311-199 spire point. After breaking the inside edge with a round file, it is extremely versatile and works with almost any kind of .30- ish bullet in the lube-sizer. I use it for Lee .309/.312 bullets.

The RD have a different prefix... SC for the conventional grease groove, and TL for tumble lube... sometimes it'll have a (RD) note in the description

Long ago Aladin (Jay Downs) designed a CB that was based on a Speer Spitzer and produced by Lee Precision as a group buy on the Boolits site. It shot OK with the usual CB propellants, but was more consistent once you went to something akin to IMR 4350 (in the .30-06). I purchased such a mould and upon a suggestion "over there" tried IMR 4350 and was amazed at the difference it made. Doubters about spire point CB's should think twice about that kind of conventional wisdom and ask Veral Smith about it. They can indeed be shot accurately if you're open to using a different powder.

But not necessarily just "slow"; surplus 4831 was great for this as it was easy to ignite.

Tom's 165 will feed in the gas guns, including the M-14 designs.
it isn't a full spire point but has the angle until the flat out there on the nose similar to the H&G 68.

MP's 180 silhouette, is my other go to bullet for the Armalite. RCBS's silhouettes will also feed reliably but their molds cast too small for my use and are only two cavity.
