Why do I hate anything alox?

actually,,,, Alox undercoated.
True. Alox based compounds are/were commonly used for internal rust-proofing in vehicles. I always swore that LEE Liquid Alox started out in the same barrels that Ziebart used for rustproofing. I doubt I'll ever change my mind on this. And another commercial use: We once got a new crankshaft in the shop that we cleaned off the Cosmolene type coating and set in the block, only to find that although it was very similar to the original, it wasn't the correct replacement. The supplier was kind of a jerk and wouldn't take it back, even though it had only been set in the block, but the caps weren't even set on it. I went home and got a bottle of LEE Liquid Alox and slathered it on the crank, then left it to dry. It looked perfect, and it smelled perfect, and we ended up having no trouble returning it for credit.

Zep makes a product called Linebacker for protecting bare metal, it's aerosol LLA.
LPS-3 is the same thing, if you can find it anymore.
Amsoil motorcycle chain lube is also the same stuff, except it's like $60 a spray can and is called....wait for it....synthetic.

I rum some 340 grain 45 70 bullets in alox twice. Got a pretty heavy coat
Used 25 grains of 2400.alliant.powder..pretty good thump with a fairly good crimp on the bullet. When loading the bullet alot of the alox come off on bullet case. Is there a problem with what I'm doing? First time loading the 45 70 with cast bullets.

and your using too much.
I use 45-45 lube on my 45-70's it's been cut with 50% mineral spirits and I ladle it on with a fork.

Thanks for your answers. I will open up case a little more with expander. I wipe off excess lube and don't seem to have a problem yet.

My shooting buddy, Ed, has not embraced PC yet even though I offer to PC the bullets I cast for him! He still uses plain Alox! I gave him a good batch of Ben's Red and also Ben's liquid lube ( the real stuff!) ....which he refuses to try!

"The smell of fired Alox in the morning!" ( napalm would be better!)

Not on a regular basis but it bears the snow and cold in winter. It is also a 10 min drive instead of 30+.
I far prefer shooting outside but sometimes one does what one must?

I long ago went to LBT lubes just to get away from the Alox. Breathing that smoke makes my chest hurt for days. I'm probably going to be testing some BLL in the near future, but if I have any respiratory problems it is back to LBT until I get further with the PC experiments.

I knew about Smokey's racing shenanigans. He was a MASTER! But had zero clue he was a WWII bomber pilot.

I can still ID GI 5.56 being shot just by the smell. Have bad sinuses all my life. But I like the various lube smells. Still have/use some 45/45/10 (my last bit of holdover). Migrated to Ben's LL - and have 4-5 cans of liquid wax - so I will die with a lot left over. I have done a little pan lube on fat 45-70 bullets. And then, after ALL the above, AND everyone going to PC (a pun! lol!), I GO BUY not one, but TWO Lyman 45s and a bucket of lube sizers to start press lubing bullets! I am WAY Dinosaur mode! 'Course, I DO shoot almost everything that is 100+ yrs old!

My son with the combat history shot some recently with me . I made a batch of modified Darrs and used "spent" foo foo wax . He got this look and says "what is that ? That's not right ....." ," What you don't like designer black cherry ? "

I guess the oils used for scenting don't all burn up . :)

nope they get atomized and you can make quite the impression on those around you.

I was mixing some melon scented candles with some other scent years back, and it stank when fired, it worked fine but god.
it got termed the asscrack sweat lube by everyone that smelled it when fired.
I moved on to other stuff like vanilla and coffee and those ain't so bad.

Since I’ve started powder coating my bullets, I’ve given away all of my “sticky” lubes and only size .459 for the 45-70 in my Lyman Lube sizer. Bullets are still pc’d and I use no lube, size only because I don’t have a Lee push sizer in this size. Don’t miss the mess, the sticky on everything, the smoke or the leading... (come to think of it I hated the smell too...)

Wha
My condolences to anyone who has to shoot at an indoor range on a regular basis
What, no fans?

I shoot at a small gun club indoor range sometimes. Always and only in the winter. The heat only gets turned on when you are there shooting so the concrete building is as cold as it is outside. When the exhaust fans (located above the targets) are turned on, it’s get downright frigid. It would probably be more comfortable shooting outside at that point! Man, I’m cold just thinking about it...

Asscrack sweat lube

The girls on the ammo depot often complained about the summer time swampass and I'm thinking that it is completely wrong on so many levels that I find that so funny .

I think we should make the move away from the fruit scents and into "manly" candles like sandalwood , honeysuckle , and cedar closet , but Ms doesn't like sandalwood .......

AcS Lube. Fiver is famous yet again. THAT is a mental picture for ya.

For about three years now, my sense of smell has been non-existent and sense of taste is much-diminished. This is caused by the damage to my sinus cavities from the shotgun pellets installed in Aug. 1981. Back then, the docs were surprised that my smeller still worked, and left the pellets in place because sensory loss was guaranteed if they did the surgery to remove them and "Patch the roof" as the neuro guy described it. So, I skated for 37 years or so before the senses departed, and the docs said it would occur eventually.

The taste-loss is strangely random. My response to picante ("heat" from peppers) is totally undiminished, as is salt taste and bitterness. Sweets are diminished but discernable, meats of all kinds have lost about 1/3 of their savor. Vegetables and starches and their complex flavor variations are all over the map. With the loss of taste has come a much-enhanced sense of texture and mouth-feel. But smell? Zero zip nada. Not complaining, I never expected to see age 60--let alone feel this good at 65+. I just count my blessings, size bullets, and empty out cartridges whenever I can--rinse & repeat.

So, alox/beeswax lubes don't make much difference to me. Those shag-nasty feral bees in the desert still get indignant in Spring, though. Rotten ^%$# things.
