Why do people sand blast molds?

Looking at a mould, and all block surfaces are a uniform light grey. That mottled, peened look. What is something, I see no pitting, the metal surfaces are pretty smooth. Er, I mean that they are pretty uniform.

Many different ways, Evapo-Rust is my preferred rust remover. One good casting session and those blocks would re-blue... Gaah....

I would have never dreamed of using sand blast.
I did buy an LBT one time that looked like Comet and a brush was used on it?

I have used Comet and a toothbrush but with only soft scrubbing. Great for removing oil from manufacturing.

Same reason peope wire-wheel the cavities.

I just clean mine by putting them all in my wet tumbler with pins, Comet, some sand, and the pins. I add water and a little soap.
After 16 hours of tumbling I dump them out, wash them well, and throw them away. This works best if you have at least a couple of iron moulds in there.

Great way to justify getting new moulds.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I've been wondering how wet tumbling a mould would work. I have a 451 RB mould that was going to be sacrificed in the name of science. I'll try it one half at a time.

Someday.
