My dark, plumbous desires are driving me to get a modern Marlin 1895 in 45-70 running. But my stash of 457 molds lacks a 405.

I have some Lyman 410nnn rifle moulds that are too heavy for my .414 SuperMag...

My 457 class molds, no 405...
457121 (475)
457122 (330, HP)
457125 (500)
457406 (475)
462560 (545)

Not a 405 grainer, but I have a Lyman 457124 385 grainer that would like a new home.

This would work well also.

And don’t forget that most Marlin 1895 rifles prefer a .460 bullet and most Lyman moulds struggle to cast fatter than .457.

I really like the Lyman 457678? Its a flat Meplat and 400g. Probably wrong numbers. C21E627A-037C-43B7-9DCF-2AA4493B1C93.jpeg
And thats a 450 BM case.

Bbut I am a hunter first.

As I surfed the internet, I read a post that said Microgroove barrels ran larger, but the worst rumors concerning cast bullets and MicroGroove were from using normal sized bore riders, and when you spank an unsupported bore rider, they slump.

What dimensions do RCBS 405s drop, size wide?

Uh, the OP mentioned the 1600fps thing, the leading thing, and he used correctly sized bullets and had no issues. That does not contradict your statement on Ranch Dog, it suggests RD bullets have the diameter and shape required.

I was more addressing the internet misinformation that micro groove was a problem for cast bullets.

Michael designed his RD bullets to fit the “normal” Marlin throat dimensions and bore dimensions. I have killed a deer with both the 350 and 425 Rad bullets in my Marlin 1895. I can assure you that they do indeed work very well.

Michael has spent a ton of time, money, and energy looking at what performs best in Marlin rifles. His designs just plain work.

My Remlin 1895 is .451×.458 and happy with the 457193 that falls out of the single @.459 , 415 gr in my pistol alloy . However I've run it in 1-20 + cu (tamper seals) to straight WQWW and from 10.0 U to 35.0 H332 and dabbled with H 4198 . It is probably the single most flexible bullet in my whole kit as I also sized it to .454 in a trial for the 45 Raptor . I even sized it .452 and patched it but the gains over grease were nil so no more paper .

If you're going to "lay the coal to it" then the MP 462-420 , mine at .460-417 PB and 380 HB , is the answer . It doesn't start to get happy until into modern lever action data , even on my pistol alloy .
