Youth Model stock for my 9 yr. old grandson

I found a youth model stock for my Handi 30-30 single shot.
Once the stock has a nice camo job on it and fitted to the rifle , I plan to give this rifle to my grandson, Trevor.

I'll keep the 14" LOP adult stock.
He is growing taller by the day.
Won't be long until we can change back to the full size stock.

Ben

This 1st photo has the youth model stock installed on the rifle.
It is positioned on top of the adult length butt stock for size comparison purposes.

Here is the youth model in place. ( 11.5 " LOP )

measure under that recoil pad and make some 1/2-3/4" spacers you can add back in as he grows.
by the time he gets to a 14" LOP he will be 20.

I can only say that if someone would have offered me something like this when I was 9 yrs. old, the nations lead supply would have experienced a substantial drop .

Up-Date

  • The youth stock now has a nice camo job.
  • The youth stock is on the rifle now.
  • I have a pretty nice " Red Dot " sight on now.
  • The Red Dot sight is bore sighted and ready for the range.
The adult stock is pictured below the youth version.

I want to shoot some plain base loads at about 850 - 950 fps to start him out.

that would do it for sure.
I have an rcbs mold similar to that one and it does shoot well, might have to give it a go in a rifle as well.
it works in the revover on small game a rifle would just make the shots a lot more accurate.

The above bullet should do fine for what I want right now.
I'm thinking of 4.2 of Red Dot with the 103 gr. SWC sized .311 in once fired 30-30 brass. Should be fairly accurate, relatively quiet, with minimal recoil, ..........all three are good for a 9 yr. old.

I plan to start my grandson out at 15 and 25 yards with the Handi - Youth model 30-30 Win rifle.
Once he gains some confidence and acquires some good shooting technique, we can move the target farther down range.

Quick success and FUN for a 9 yr. old are at the " Top of the List ".
I want him to be anxious to get back to the range as soon as possible.

fun is always operative with kid's.
targets that break, or pop, make dinging noises, or spin around, hold their interest a lot better than trying to make the holes stack in on top of each other.

Agree entirely. Clays are a great target for kids. They need that visual clue that they were on target.

I once read that you could take a 2 X 4 and mill a groove down the center.

Place saltine crackers in the groove. Let kids shoot them with a .22 rifle. Kids love it and so do the birds.

Crackers would be good too. Price is certainly right.
That little 30 cal bullet should shoot more than well enough to take out any reasonable target at 25 yards.

Now that is something I will be trying. Thanks
I get tired of picking up all the busted stuff. seems like I take more garbage home than I take to the range.
