i've got WAYYYYYYYY to time on my hands.......

i was going to with the 45 Colt in a 10" Contender barrel (either Bullberry, MGM or SSK) to hunt deer with next year. my dad (RIP) had a friend back in the '70s (it might have been in the early '80s) that had a TC Contender in 30 Herrett and he luved it. i was "thinkin" that a 357 Rem Maximum would be great in a 10" barrel and then it hit me, 357 Herrett. i have about 400 pieces of 30-30 Starline brass (100pcs are for the 35/30-30) and i reform brass ('06 to the 7x57, 8x57, 9.3x57, 7.65x53...), which can be quite annoying, but i like it .the place i hunt deer is sorta close up, 60ish and under and i think i'll go with 2x scope. just like the 45 Colt, it will be a cast boolit only gun. i'll probably just size the 200gr RCBS fn gc to .359", but maybe i'll want something different, like a 180gr fn gc.

ok, now i am ready for comments and the Herrett and tell me that i need a 45 Colt or a 357 Rem Maximum.

I always wanted a Contender. Finally got a 2 fer - 7-30 Waters and 30 Herrett. I also ALWAYS wanted a Contender in 30 and 357 Herrett!

I now have two frames and 3 bbls. 7-30 Waters, 223, 30 and 357 Herretts! Gotta get the Herretts set up...

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I'm in full support of your decision! There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 35 Herret and it should make a superb cast bullet gun. I'm trying to snag a 30 Herret/218 Bee Contender combo myself!

I have a 10" 45 Colt
Had a 10" Maxi have a 14" maxi

Had a 14" 357 Herrett LOVE IT! 10" wouldnt be my choice. Too much blast and lost lreformance. IMHO Its needs a 12" minimum and 14 is better. Still shootable as a handgun in a 'tender.

Love the Maxi and it didnt have the blast of the Herrett but the 14 just seemed and preformed better.

I have Maxis in 14, 16, 17.5 and 24". I am a fan!

I liked that 357 Herrett but the Maxi was close enough for me as I also am well invested in 35's with a couple 35 Rems 356, 358, 35 Whelen a d 358 Norma. (Of coarse lil bro 357 Mags too.)

Not one tiny bit sorry I picked up a "Super 14" in .357 Herrett. Just 10 grains of Unique gives me 1240 fps with a 216 grain semi pointed cast bullet from an unmarked mould sized to .359". The RCBS 35-200-FN is just a skosh faster. I am only plinking 210 yard steel buffalos with it so far. But that strikes me as pretty efficient. I don't think I'd like it as much in a 10".

i think the barrel can go to 12". i'm thinking that 200gr RCBS fn gc is going 1600-1700fps would be great for deer. my m94 in 35/30-30 is going 1726fps with a 200gr RCBS fn gc and it's a great deer round as my stomach can attest...lol!!!

all i want is a close cover 60ish yards or less deer round. if the Contender graces me with a 3" group at 100 yards, then i'm golden. i used the 7x30 'tender about 15+ years ago and i got good with it (3/4 - 1 1/4" group at 100 yards). it was nothing compared to my dad (RIP), which is using the same load, was 1/4 - 1/2" group at 100 yards. (groups is 5 shots/bench) he was great at it, because he shot ALOT!!! the only bad about it was the muzzle brake. i'd stand behind him and i would see the "concussion wave" after he shot. you had only one time before you had your ear plugs/muffs in, because if you didn't, ringing would come to your ears and stay awhile. i learned it, my dad (RIP) learned it.....lol
