A mile stone day of sorts .

In the spirit of sharing kids .
On a hot summers day 31 yr 1 month 21 days ago a weak 4lb 8oz preemie at a strapping 14" came into the world to 2 woefully unprepared parents . Sure they had clothes , diapers and the essentials , the mother had a little experience with 2 much younger brothers but dad had zero skills . He figured out cloth diapers pretty fast and feeding routines too .
Alas the little runt spent 19 days in an ICN before coming home . 4 weeks early lots of excitement , what with him being a footling breach and coming out by way of C section . Apparently he sucked up a load of water or didn't spit it out in a timely manner and had a wet lung and one partially collapsed . Blue babies aren't really the best way for them to get started in life on the outside .
We were warned over and over that he would be slow and stunted . Thank God for that ! It took him all the way to the 6th grade to figure out he was smarter than the teachers with a greater learning capacity and higher reading retention than most if not all of them . 6'1" and 165# at graduation . I'm glad he only scores a 140 IQ we wouldn't have been able to keep him interested if he'd been smart and grown to his full potential . Hard to believe it seeing him now I once held his head fully supported on 4 fingers with his legs dangling barely mid forearm .

Today that little runt will follow a path taken by his baby brother in the Army . The first 30 hr are no worry .........but he will be on my mind day and night for the next 15 months .

The slow stunted one is on the right .

Grand Mother was right when she said kids are a 20 yr investment and it takes 25 yrs to know if it was a good one or a bad one .
I guess I did ok . All 4 have better reords than me , lived to adulthood . They aren't over populating . 2 have survived 6 yr of Army/Navy and the other is holding her own on the outside .
I just have to get this last one back home without too much damage .
The oldest never busted down Corporal in the Army . Here's to earning his gold spurs .

Wow. Yeah, we had it easy! Full term baby who came out 100% perfect, best medical care to be had. Wife was a premie, 6 weeks, had the cord wrapped twice around her neck, but made it ok via emergency C-section with a dose of O2 for the first few days. I was full term natural, parents were broke and unprepared, didn't even have running water, but they got through it just like their parents did in the Depression. Whooping cough nearly killed me when I was three or four. Funny you mention cloth diapers, my mother used them and washed them in an old two-compartment wash tub with the crank wringer on the rinse tub. Dad hauled water home in 5-gallon buckets after work, even watered the garden that way. If it weren't for hand-me-down clothes to cut up and sew baby outfits, I'd have been nekkid. Still have a lot of that stuff in my keepsake collection. Seems like some of the strongest had the most to overcome, glad your young man made it and is making his dad proud!
