Additives To Corn Cob Media Question

At large, whereabouts unknown.
That reminds me of something from the past. I tried Lymans walnut media once, and it left my cases looking sandblasted so I didn't try walnut again for several years. Lizard Litter is walnut, but it leaves cases shiny. I never did get that.

their turbo polish stuff has jewelers rouge in it.
this polishes the cases, but has a tendency to also leave a dust behind that blows down your barrel.

Also finds it's way into a revolvers action action. Quit using it years ago, still finding hints of red in few of my revolvers.

I would never use the stuff with rouge on it, lots of stories from gunsmiths about people wearing out barrels faster and the fact they often noticed red stuff in the grooves and throats of the barrel. Didn't take long for people to put 2 and 2 together.

Why would I want to take a chance on firelapping my bore with each very shot I fired? Worse yet, they didn't even know it was happening.

I use new finish car wax.
In a new batch of corn cob I put new finish in every time for the first dozen or so times.
After that, a tablespoon or two of mineral spirits. That will clean carbon out of the cases, even deprimed primer pockets.

The mineral spirits seems to "wake up"'the waxes and cleaners.

And before ya ask, I have had zero issues with any primers being killed by the MS. The MS evaproates off with little if any residue.

I have acetone in the garage. I understand acetone is stronger or more pure than mineral spirits.
Is there some additive or added chemical in mineral spirits that makes it work better in this capacity as a case cleaner/polisher?

I mostly use the acetone to wash boolits before powder coating and to clean casting molds.

mineral spirits also seems to break down lanolin better than anything else.
Isopropyl alcohol holds it in suspension then evaporates leaving the stuff behind.
acetone seems to be a good wash to pull it off but it evaporates too quickly.
it however doesn't leave a residue behind like the mineral spirits do.

Note to self: "A little bit of Nu Finish car polish goes a long way!".

I may have over done it a little bit on the first batch with the new corn cob media.

Being from Texas, I figured if a little bit is good, a lot is better!

Acetone is also very good at dissolving many plastics. Nasty stuff really.

Works good on wad fouling, though. Even better, make Glen's Red with MEK and all the other good stuff that causes cancer, birth defects, and dain bramage but cleans guns (and stock finishes) really well.

One 2/3 capful per Lyman 1200 rd tumbler full of media, about every 3rd or 4th use is plenty
enough for me. One 40 lb bag of corncob lasts me years.

you wanna let the nu-finish run in the tumbler for about 10-15 minutes before adding the dry brass.

I use Midway polish, been working fine for me for many, many years. Some time I'll add a little nu-finish but can't tell the difference in results. I've got brass that I cleaned and stored 20 to 25 years ago, it has turned a little but it's still clean, loads fine, shoots fine and cleans up fine after use. Corn Cob is great, I do not like the walnut shells.
