it's a great movie and a good job by Cooper in it.
the light parts aren't silly and the somber parts are just somber enough.
the direction and lighting is also outstanding.
you feel like your there as an observer of the events but not intruding on what is going to happen.
even the close ups are controlled and only used to convey an extra amount of feeling.

I think it done a great job of telling the story and letting you know about the man without going over the line.

Fiver,

A good example of how to make a great movie.
Seems that is lost today....................

I must have watched that movie forty times. Probably my favorite movie. Alvin York is also a favorite of mine. I've seen the valley of the three forks of the wolf; his old grist mill and the place the state of Tennessee gave him.... The old church.... and his grave.
Gary Cooper was an old Montana boy who was raised with guns.... It makes a difference to most of us because nothing takes from acting an action part by a person you know has never handled a gun much less with the ability he tries to project! Cooper shot all his life. A cover picture is attached... He must have liked Model 70's...... Good choice!

hmm you got bit by the double post thing too.
I know I only clicked once.

the older I get the more I really appreciate a lot of the older movies.
I drove 2.5 hours one direction a couple of weeks back to see a Humphrey Bogart film on the big screen.
I will probably watch Casablanca on TV tonight with the kids.

Have the movie on disc. Watch it two or three times a year.

Sgt. York was on set throughout most of the shooting of the movie.

Some of the older movies I like colorized. That would not work with this one. It needs to be black and white.

York was a pretty good sized fellow.
The Germans feared him.
Here York is photographed with the Gov. of TN.
York is on the right :

A relative of mine, I think he would be my father's cousin, moved from southern Illinois, lifelong
home due to Chicago craziness, to Kentucky, out in the country. We were talking on the phone last
year and he said his next door neighbor (in the country) is Alvin York's son. He says he has great stories
about his father.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Speaking of old movies, I used to work with a guy who had a favorite saying. "It's Marilyn or Jane", referring to Monroe and Russell and choices. Finally one day I said, "I'll take Rhonda Fleming." He turned and started laughing like crazy and said, "At last, someone who speaks my language!"

Carbine Williams has been on a couple of times last month. I had forgotten about that movie.
