the way i see it is 1 thousand and 4 tenths.
if you move the number one place to the left, it's 1 hundred of an inch and 4 thousands.

i dunno.

No prob, most shop types would call it "14 tenths". As long as we get it in the end we're good. 14 hundredths was some real thick flashing though! Thats where the confusion starts.

1"= 1 inch
.1"=1/10th inch
.01"=1/100th inch
.001"=1/1000th inch (1 thou)
.0001" = 1/10 000th inch

Really quite simple and clear if explained in this fashion.

Yeah it’s simple but I am always moving over one space to far, always have to think about it.
Seems like I’m not the Lone Ranger.

i see it that way too.
the issue is when it's 14-15 thou.
.001 is one thousandth so to me .0014 is 14, 1 thousands.
one thousand and 4 ten thousands would be .001,4 otherwise it'd have to be shown as something like .000140

Aviation 014,025 sheet metal are just that right of the decimal .
Mathematics, "and" means "." Which is why we wrote Eight and 40/100 dollars , or a variation of such on cheques .

Regardless of how we see things with our individual quirks, we need to be on same scale to make any sense of things. There's a video out there on "The History of Precision". Good stuff. We should be thankful really. Wasn't long ago we'd be using vernier calipers to do our measuring and on them a half a thou can make the lines not line up at all!!!
