Saw-Whet owl.
I will never forget the first time I saw a Saw-Whet Owl
In the early 1990's I was putting on a late season deer drive for my buddy. It was our Flintlock season. When I would drive I used a smooth bore flintlock with shot for small game! I really got into some thick crap and had to crawl through it. I finally came up in a crabapple tree stand and tried to stand up! When I did I was 12" away face to face with this little creature that was not afraid! He just blinked his eyes at me as he sat in the tree that I came up by! I must have spent 20 minutes watching him and taking to him. It was a surreal experience! Something I will never forget!
Interestingly after that we actually started hearing them on our property! Guess he passed the word around I was a good guy!

Burrowing owls are very small birds.
I have only seen them a couple of times.
They were living in Belding Ground Squirrel "AKA Sage Rats" holes.
Sage rats are fairly small squirrels.

These are very small body owls. But as a typical owl they have large broad wings.
Happily we do not have rattle snakes here... That is my future AO.
