So I have been wanting on this one, for a spell. Been reading, watching, mostly looking and thinking. (read TROUBLE!!)
I want a 12g slug mold. New friend picked up the Italian Savrog style, a few months back. We have been talking. I was wanting the "Botfly" segmented. But ran a ross a good price on a Paradox style. He has the Italian, so we can share and both get to try the others choice.

I like a WFN so this is up my alley. :)

Its a Russian Savrog mold.

So, I partly chose this so he and I can swap and both benefit some. They also can use same wadding.
Now I'm on the hunt for these wads. RLN usually has but not now. Any leads would be appreciated. I was able to grab fifty but at there cost I did not buy more. (FOUND)

Anyone hoed this row? Help appreciated.

What Spindrift said. I've always held that Foster slugs in a smoothbore 870 with rifle sights is sufficient for my needs (3" @ 50 yards), and I shoot so few of them that factory loads suffice.

It was always a chore to get the deputies to shoot the 12 gauges at quals. We did it twice yearly, and the whining and moaning was legion. I love The Gauge, and slugs aren't THAT bad to shoot. Rifles are legal to hunt with where I live, and almost all of them can out-range and out-group the 12 gauge handily. Some jobs are just done better with rifles. Now, for that heresy I spoke of in another post......there are a number of writers in the gunrag genre that have attempted to expand handguns and shotguns into what is more properly the rifle venues. I suppose we all have to choose at what point doing so becomes stunt work rather than tool usage.

Haha, Dont fear the 12... embrace it. ;) I have shot quite a few, been thru buku qualifications both in teaching as well as meeting qualifications. :) As well as few "training" seminars on the defensive 12ga. Its a favorite zero doubt. I enjoy seeing how others teach and others points of view.
We are a shotgun state on state land. I hunt mostly private where rifles are legal. But I still bring out the slug launcher for some specials hunts.

This is something I have wanted to do for some years now. with the costs of ammo let alone availability being more self sufficient is a good thing! PLUS ya dont NEED to always load dislocators!!

I've got the paradox mould and cast a few. I'm not going to use the wad, but am going to build my own from old Alcon PGS seals, fiber and nitro cards. I'll let you know how it works out, but I'm loading 16 gauge sabots from the Russian moulds now.
Going to be getting the .410 sabot soon, but they were out of stock. Email inquiry said they would be available again early April.

Have you measured the slug yet? I have seen most are coming in at 0.724"-0.725". You might have to coat them a time or two. My botfly is 0.729" on the top band and 0.725" on the bottom two. Going to depend on your barrel.

I am making the pvc wads at 0.730" so I should not get any blowby. Waiting on 3" hulls to get in stock. Tried ordering them 4x even though they show in stock they go to backordered about an hour later. Bpi does not have an live inventory.

I'm with CZ on slugs. No longer hunt where they were required. My Remington LH 1100 with 12 gauge slug barrel would do better than 3" at fifty................with Remington foster slugs. Use to buy them for $1 / package of five. They were always on sale, just before gun season. I stocked up on them. Haven't shot a slug in ages. Found out that muzzle loaders were way more accurate and were also legal to hunt with, in the shotgun only areas of Michigan.

We have seen a decline in shotgun hunting here over the last few years. Gone are the days of wall of orange in the woods. Some popular spots will still see many on opener to the first weekend but sharp and severe decline after that. We have a BUNCH of small land locked state lands in some GREAT AREAS. IF you know where you might have found a sanctuary and we have some giants. ONLY way in these pieces is with a slug gun and buck shot is outlawed here too.

Tommy I TOTALLY forgot you bought that BotFly!! We will be doing some swappin if your willing!! No I just ordered probably a couple Weeks but Im told they are actually quick ship from Russia. I also got a pleasant suprise this AM. What I thought was a over pricing of 35$ for 50 wads turns out a miss-print and its 150 wads for 35$ So now looks like I have 350 wads coming!! :) ;)

My other buddy in Georgia has the Firehydrant slugs and says he is shooting tennis ball groups in all his smooth guns past 50 yrds. Reliably! So Ill be swappin with him too!

Yes you KNOW ILL BE POWDER
COATIN THEM! :):p;)

I am interested to see what you think and find Rally!! I like the looks and write ups on this slug. Before they was discoed the Rem Buck Hammer was a favorite!! I went down to Dicks when I herd and bought the remainder of the shelf!!! Maybe 30 boxes. I still have a dozen or so. Devastating but not accurate at 100. But cut same holes at 50-60. 99% of my distances hunted. Im hoping for better at range with these but time will tell.

If 50-60 yards is all you are shooting do not overlook the simple to cast and launch Round Ball.
Yes I have at least one Rusky mold that I will play with if we an get out of here this year but it will have to really impress me to take the place of a .740 diameter RB hugging along at 1400 FPS from a smoothy or rifled barrel 12 bore.

I picked up a Lyman .678” round ball mold.

I’m gonna try these cloth patched, with a cut down base(petals removed), out of my full choke gun.

If I fail to get any decent accuracy, I’ll consider buying another barrel for my 1960’s vintage 870 Wingmaster.

There are some shotgun deer hunting areas on some of the islands near me that I would like to hunt.
