My 14 yr. old grandson , Trevor wanted to shoot the Howa 308 Win. at the range today. He was shooting off of a sandbag rest with the target at 50 yards. He was using a load that was a proven load. A Ranch Dog Plain base that weighed 168 grs., sized .3115" The rifle likes the load.

He is about to fire 6 rounds :

Now 10 rounds , same load specs at 50 yards :

Needless to say, I'm very proud of Trevor !

Notice that all the groups were fired with plain base bullets .

Yeah I was able to shoot with my three grandkids visit this summer. It was very good time, the grandkids were certainly into it. Will be following up when Karyn and I go to Ashland this winter.
Ben I’ve been following your writings about your range time with Trevor hoping to do the same with my grandkids. Finally happened. Hopefully with practice my grands can make some targets as good as what Trevor makes.
It’s awesome that you have been able to spend the time with your grandson as you have.

I find it interesting that many cast bullet rifle shooters think that " If you are looking for accurate loads, you have to have a gas check bullet ."

I have not found that to be the case. It is true that if you're looking for a .30 cal. cast bullet that will shoot well in the 1,900 - 2,100 fps speed zone that the plain base bullet IS NOT for you.

But....., a plain base bullet that is shot at the " proper speed " may surprise you.

Awesome group shooting right there! A known good load in the rifle is half of the equation--the guy or gal on the steering end is just as critical. Trevor is one fine shot!

I have had pretty good luck using gas check boolits without the gas check with similar charges. Kudos to Ben and Trevor.

Just to be certain that there is no misunderstanding ........

The groups that you see in the 1st post, were not gas check bullets that I had left the gas check off of .
They were true plain base bullets.

Great cast bullets
Great load
Outstanding shooting!

What is the velocity of that load, Ben? Would you shoot a deer with it ? At what range?

I think it is in the 1,200 fps range.
This fall, I'll find out, thanks to a real good friend who game me a Chrony.

At 50 - 75 yards, it would be a very dead deer.
Ballistics similar to the 32-40.
Shooting like this , I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I have an original LEE 6C of Michael's last redesign of that bullet, which looks identical. It shoots very well in my 30/30 at about 1200 fps, but making and installing the GCs is more work than warranted for most of my 30 caliber shooting.

I need to borrow the reamer again and work up the guts to "De-GC" four or five of the cavities.

Problem is... Lady Luck has smiled upon me doing the same on other moulds enough times in a row that I fear a smack-down coming, and I don't want it to be on THAT mould.
