I got a new one too this week!

Today, actually, and it wasn't supposed to be here until MONDAY! So, it just may happen that I get to use it this weekend.

Arsenal, 429-421 x 225 gr., 4C, aluminum.

Nothing exciting, just something I should have bought 30+ years ago when I managed to find a Lyman 1C which cast large enough (.433"+") for my bulldogs. I was thinking it was an older Ideal because it didn't cast small, but when I looked the other day, it's actually a Lyman and made just about the time I gave up on them - 1986. It's been a faithful mould, but just SO SLOW. I'd try to cast with it whenever I cast with anything else, just to try to build up some "stock."

I appreciate Elmer Keith's contributions to our endeavors, but not to the worship-level some display, and I am definitely NOT a trend-follower. Still, THIS bullet, the 429-421 (any one of most of the many avatars thereof) has been a no-fail, all-'round 44 bullet for any 44 I've owned - Mag or Special, target loads to full-house hunting loads. The vast majority of these I've sent downrange have made their way at a leisurely pace of 850 to 1kfps though. No matter which 44 I've tried it in, it has worked well.

I just got a new NOE a month or so ago, sort of out of the blue, but this is one I've planned for and into which I invested some of what I brought home from the last gun show. This should complete my collection, except that I do want to eventually have one cavity of each of the bullets I cast to be HP'd. THAT is probably going to be the part where it gets expensive. The mould @Ben just shared just makes me want o do this even more.

I have to put in a plug for Jared, at Arsenal. I've been very happy with his moulds and I love the idea that I can just order what I want, specify a non-standard diameter if I wish, and have a mould in a few weeks. I go with the 4C aluminum and I can have one for under $100, shipped. My last 4C NOE finally just broke the $100 mark, but those are still a great value as well. I got a few NOEs at just under that already, but I think NOE held the price longer than a lot of others would have. NOE and Arsenal make up the bulk of the handful of moulds I have settled in with.

Congrats on your new mold. That is a great bullet.
And Yep, Arsenal, N.O.E. & Accurate all make Great molds.
Have only bought one Lyman since that 1st N.O.E. 6+yrs ago. And a dozen of the New makers in that time frame.
Probably never buy another new Lyman.

The weight of these different 429421 clones is all over the place. The actual Keith version was 250gr. I have seen them at 245, 250, 255, etc. Mine from Accurate weigh 263 grains.

Alloy composition and diameter. My .454" Arsenals weigh 257-grains, cast of 2:1 clip-on:stick-on ingots. I don't know the percentage of lead and trace elements of the ingots, nor their individual weights. Elmer knew the exact lead content of his bullets, mine are a mystery.

Ain't that the truth! Many minor excursions in feature have occurred over the years as well, but I've found that for my purposes, the general form seems to work well. I'm not sure how close this one is to the original, but it does differ somewhat from my 1C Lyman it replaces - quite subtly.

I wonder how much difference in weight there is between round and square lube groove versions. The new Arsenal is square, the old Lyman is round.

I'd have bought this mould whether it were 245, 250 or 255, but I didn't want it heavier than 255. I've cleaned it and gave it a soak from ambient (about 40F) to 400 F and back, and just started a second "soak." I'll measure and weigh as soon as I get a chance to cast. I don't usually bother with the soak cycles, because they get that when I preheat to cast anyway, but today it's easy enough to let it soak while I get other stuff done. Hoping for a casting session Sunday.

@462 , Each mould I've ordered from Jared has cast exactly what I've requested. I like that I'm not stuck with what a mould from the shelf will cast and that I can add that request without an extra charge and still get it in a few weeks. THREE, in this instance. It's just too easy to order a mould from him, which can be too tempting sometimes.

I have a square groove 421 that was relieved and casts .448 at 257 with 1-20 enriched WW . In it's original 429421 form it was probably 255 gr . It'll go 260 in near pure (1-60?) . It works out for the Dagoon as about the same as the old Pickett . It's not bad over 40 gr of FFg , my own self powder takes a full chamber and seats the reach . It's a little faster about equal to FFFg at 40 gr . Might make 44 mag levels in that 4# tank .

It was actually originally intended to have the bands opened from .429 to for a .432 but I guess it chattered a little to much to be desired so he worked it a little more in the lathe ....... It also makes a fine paper patch in a 45 Raptor if the 454424 isn't enough .
It's a tight slip fit in the old ASM Dragoon .
