IDEAL 452423

I just bought this one.
Looks like it could benefit from a real good
mould cleaning.
May have paid a little too much for it ?
I'll have it in a few days.
Should work just fine in my Model 625 with Auto Rim brass.

I also have a square lube groove one that I like very much. For me, it shoots better than the round groove ones because the bands are not only full width, but also thicker. Not any difference with light loads, but with full house loads it is notable. That is a very old mould, by the way.

I always wanted one because the 452424 was a skosh too long for the cylinder of my Model 97 FA. After the FA fell victim to this Spring's down sizing frenzy the point is now moot.

Its a good one!!

The LEE is close but lacks proper lube grooves. My friend has the NOE copy thats very nice. I have the same as you Ben single cav round groove. I was gifted a great deal on a MP version thats a real dandy!

Best of luck with it, I know its gonna be great.

I really like this mould... cast fine for heavy thumpers in 45acp. I need to review mine to see if it's a square or round groove... But it's an older ideal, which casts great... got it from Steve, back when...

Some years of cavity-smoking as presented here. If a little is good, a lot more might be lots better......?

You know my views on Keith designs for revolvers......I have yet to find one I didn't like. The -423 wasn't made in huge numbers, and I just found mine (a recent-made Lyman 2-banger) in 2018. Given this is an Ideal tool, it was likely made during Mr. Keith's lifetime.

If there is a 'Flaw' in the Keith design, it is the over-generous lube groove in his oringinal design. That was OK if bear grease was your only option, but with even 50/50 lube you don't need that kind of capacity. Fill that space with drive band length--all 3 of them.

I HAD a single cavity Ideal 452423 and foolishly let it get away. My 625 shot very well with that bullet.

"over-generous" lube capacity is a reflection of the "lube" available back then. Increase beeswax content to make lube less slippery.

I was also late owning one altho I knew of it a while back when my friend sold me his 1955 Smith 25-2. I absolutely loved the look of that stumpy cartritage with a SWC bullet. It just looked rite!

I had a 4-cavity Ideal for this one. I think the guy who bought my 1917 bought it as much for the mould accompanying it as for the gun itself.
