If they could only talk....

Ben made this comment earlier, and I thought it would be a great title for a thread. There are lots of moulds out there that fit in this category. This is my well used Early Ideal 12 gauge ball mould. It was listed cheap on an auction some time back as simply a ".735 roundball mould". The combination of a brief description, and it being an elderly one-piece style mould must have deterred the competition. I was delighted to find out that it was exactly what I thought it was. I will cast with it for this falls hunt. What in the back of your mould box?

A fine tool, made by craftsmen for craftsmen. I have a few "vintage" moulds, mostly Ideal and an odd scissor-handle or two for casting black powder revolver conicals.

I reiterate, I do wish they could talk.

I'd love to sit down with a cup of coffee
and listen to their stories of the past............

I wanted to buy this one a few drinks and let it ramble. I bought it in an auction, once again rather ill-described. It came out of Southern Idaho, which intrigued me. I researched it for well over a year without success, and got pretty frustrated with the project. Finally, a collector in Florida told me to put a crazy price on it, so I did. And he paid it! I started missing it before it even left.

Looks like an old Ideal 429422 that is missing the original factory HB pin, so somebody made a replacement. That's a very interesting bullet.

The pics don't do it justice. It was very deeply blued, like an old Colt, just a little darker. The pics make it look bear up, but pics make everything look beat up.

It was original. This is the original captive pin style hollow base. I've had a couple Ideal 38 wadcutter moulds like this too, and one of the guys on CB has the grail mould, a 32 S&W hollow base bullet mould from the twenties or thirties that was the one piece type, and had this style of hollow base. These moulds never had provisions for detachable base pins. The base pins slid on screws similar to how the Cramer designs worked.

This old dog has stories...I know it !
Multiple repairs, and the bottom bar was missing when I got it, and I fab'd and blued the one that you see on it...as well as my redneck spring return.

All I can really say is, whoever brazed the top punch holder on, did a PERFECT job. While I have waayyyy tooo many lubesizers...When I start selling them, this one, being my favorite, will be the toughest to sell.

Oddly, I had an H&G 50 that looked much the same way. Why do people beat their moulds, especially with hammers?
