When I buy it private I will only pay top price if it is still in the pig form.

If its been ingatized it is immediately questionable and I would need trust seller.

Last I bought was 100$ a pig but I bought all he had @ 80$ ea.

I was able to locate some Lynotype through a few printers that had some from years ago at thier shops, and most was in pig form or in the letters or numbers that were used but it's almost non existent. I was wondering if anyone had any over flow they would want to sale?

The last Linotype I purchased was still in pig form (about 20 lbs each). They are marked $2.00/lb but I think we agreed on a little less because I bought several pigs. However, I doubt I'll find a deal like that again.
I melt down one pig and put that into 1 pound ingots for easier use and leave the rest in pig form for storage.
The days of Linotype machines are long over, so if you run across any of those Linotype pigs - buy them !

I ran across several of these at one of the old printers, he sold me around 150lbs of linotype. Most of it was the numbers and letters from the press. I'm still looking, mostly have wheel weight lead and plumers lead from the scrap yard.

I have almost 1500lbs of the lino pigs. Soft is what I dont have. Been buying lead sheets at the scrap yard and mixing it 3:1 soft to lino. I got this from the FIL when he past. He bought it to melt down to make weights for the tractors he had. There are about 10 of the weights he poured into the homemade steel plate boxes. They weigh about 250lbs each. He also made a couple of round ones that went on the rear wheels. They are twice the size of the smaller ones.

Someday I might go up and torch out the lead. Or drill a couple of holes and build a big fire.

That's a nice problem to have. I have maybe 5-600 lbs of Lino and a lot of range scrap. Before the rennovation, I could get all the FMJ pistol scrap I wanted for a little work at the range I still RDO for now and then. I have also found roof flashing, pipe, etc., pretty commonly.

I need to make up a bunch of alloy, probably gonna go with #2 alloy as I have quite a bit of tin as well. I'm shooting on my own place now and will recover it all one day when I run low, might be taking the dirt nap before that happens, but it is comforting to know that lead isn't going anywhere.

On linotype I've read many times that you want the newer stuff, the stuff that hasn't been remelted numerous times, if possible. As with any alloy, each time you melt and clean it, you lose a percentage of the Sb, Sn and whatever else is in it. How you determine that without a test is tricky. I think I have about 2 lbs of actual linotype here and that's about it. It's just not anything I've been lucky enough to ever run across.

Linotype is good stuff to have, for sure, but I do think an awful lot of casters obsess over aloy more than they need to. For paper, anyway, if it casts good bullets, in all likelihood they will be fine for shooting paper if one sizes, lubes and loads them appropriately.

My range had a company come in and mine it. That is why I dont have a lot of soft stuff. I used to get 2-3 5 gal buckets of shotgun slugs every year. Not anymore. And they are going to shut the range down and move it about 15 miles more to the east of me. And make you have to pay a yearly fee to use it. And no after hours scrounging for brass or lead. The next nearest range is about 90 miles away and is a free for all like this one is now.

I just buy superhard from Roto. Or med containers. I've only used maybe 200# of alloy in 10 yrs and don't have that many left anyway.
