My Lgs bought out an estate, which had 76 moulds in the deal. I got first look, and came home with four new moulds. One of them was a Lyman 313492 2 cavity. Couldn't find much info on the mould, but in my search found links to Glens wadcutter article and a post Ben jumped on. Great article by the way Glen. I learned today, this is a class 3 mould designed for field use and revolvers. Perfect for what I intend to use it for, shooting live snared beaver.
The wife, my youngest daughter and grand daughter went on a road trip yesterday, to see my oldest daughter in KC, and then my mother-in-law in Il. It was a nice day today, so I opened the shop door up and got to cast a few of this bullet today, while watching a pair of Wood ducks play in a piece of spring flooded timber outside my shop. Those ducks about drove my dogs crazy, which are kenneled about 50' from the ducks. The dogs got their revenge when I ran them at 5 PM.
Filled the pot with a 50/50 COWW-SOWW plus 3% SN alloy and cast 14 lbs of bullets. What a neat little mould. It was new when I got it. Cleaned it up with hot water and dish soap, preheated the mould on a hot plate while the pot got up to temp. Threw the first 25 bullets back in the pot, lubed the pivot screw and pins, and made some nice bullets. The nose on this bullet is .310 and the base is .313, weighs 87 grains with my alloy. I'm going to be loading it in .32 S&W long brass, with 1.5- 2 grains of BE to start with. I'm thinking around 700 Fps wont exit a head shot beaver, but still be way more authority than a .22 Lr. Wife left me a crock pot full of cabbage, carrots and ham. Good day!
