Looking for mid-west junk yards . . .

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
OK, leaving on Friday. Heading to the south rim of the Grand Canyon first then down to Albuquerque, across the 40 and up the 44 to St. Louis.

After the SLICS show in St. Louis, I'm heading down to Memphis and eventually to Warner Robins south of Atlanta.

I'm restoring a pair, yes, a pair of 1965 Ford Fairlane's and one of them is a Sports Coupe.

Now, why someone would order a Sports Coupe, with the buckets and console but get the three-on-the-tree is beyond me.

I'm doing a mild resto-mod on the Sports Coupe so I'm on the lookout for a Ford 4 speed Toploader model HEH-L or N or E.

Anybody know of junk yards that have older stuff in them along the general route I'm traveling?

Many thanks!

Mike

Mike,
Take the Grand Canyon Railroad from Williams up to the Grand Canyon Village and back. If you do, be sure to get to the station in time to watch the shootout. The railroad passes through some varied country, and strolling minstrels provide amusing entertainment, and a special event happens on the return trip. AAA has a special hotel/restaurant (excellent all-you-can-eat food three times a day)/train trip/Grand Canyon tour package. We did it 10 years ago, and liked it so much we'd like to do it again.

Side note: Williams was the last town to remain on the old Route 66. Stores along the main drag harken back to that era, and there are a lot of car shows/events.

Seligman was the town I couldn't remember in Az .

Holaman Az I suspect .

Gallop NM has treasures hidden with a new down town and an old town .
Tucumcari might have a couple too . The old down town is dead but seems to be kept up for the sake of 66 .

Though I have no firsthand knowledge if there isn't one that specializes in Cadillacs and GM there should be in Amarillo .

Elk Grove Ok and others close also celebrate 66 and I imagine would have several as well if they aren't stripped already .
Hinton is pretty friendly ....... Stock car racing is dieing and 1/4 mile has taken over ....... Not a lot of classics but lots of old parts .....I hope that made sense .....

My HS buddy did just the same. Considered himself a ladies man. He ordered a dark blue fastback 69 Cuda Formula S with front 60/40 bench (MIL version) and a three speed automatic, on the column. When we totaled that, all he could find was another 69 Formula S with buckets and floor console. That one was a light yellow.

To this day, I don't remember the accident. All I know is what was on the police report. He took a 35 mph curve at 70 mph, jumped the guard rail and slid 200 feet on it's roof. Seen the aftermath pictures of the car and the roof was flat with the headrests. First time I ever wore seat belts and can't fathom, why. Never wore them again, until they were mandatory.

My 72 Chevelle SS has the early two piece seat/shoulder belts. The shoulder strap is stored above, on the headliner. I'm the original owner, it's never been taken down.

Stock car racing is dying? Well isn't that another opportunity to get lead? Didn't they put lead in stock cars to balance them. If they don't have left over weights from their cars, I'll bet a lot of stock car guys hoarded wheel weights to make car weights they never got around to.

Yep, lead bars bolted to the chassis rail under the drivers seat. Left side heavy, right side light. Gotta make it turn left somehow.

Not all over just where you least expect to be going away .

Lost a set of U joints in Hinton Ok . Found the parts house about 2:30 on Saturday but it closed for the weekend at noon . Talked to a guy in the local market parking lot ......."my brother works down there , they closed up early to get some fishing in before the races . Lemme see if I can get hold of his boss . He'll probably come down and get you what you need ." Me , drooling with appreciation , mistakenly thinking I was in " NASCAR country " asked if it dirt , asphalt , banked or flat track ......." Oh that's cute . We don't play that roundy roundy , we have 1760/200 club " . Another 100 miles down the road I remembered I was in outlaw Farm Truck country and the picture got a lot clearer then .

junk yards that have older stuff good luck with that. Big cities used to have large junk yards but most moved way out. Old stuff has been scrapped already. Or been collected in 'collector' type yards. Just so much scrap around not worth the space to collect. Heard of a few in dry states (Az, Ut, Nv) that store old stuff.

The change in steel production technology has just about eliminated the old sprawling edge of city/country junkyards that many of us older folks were familiar with growing up. Used to be several of them in the city here, no longer. A couple of trucks with compacting and loading equipment showed up and cleared them all out. Being able to make new steel with 50% - 100% scrap content turned all those old junkyards into surface mines with low recovery costs. Ergo - no more old junkyards. There are now housing developments where all those junkyards used to be...

I know they are out there.
I watch a show on the motor trend channel where a dude from roadkill goes around and visits junk yards that specialize in stuff like 60's - 70's mopars, 50's-70's Cadillac's, etc.
