I'll give another perspective on what is wrong with this particular design. If you look at the bullet, all the bearing bands are basically in the center, it has a very long GC shank and basically a non bearing nose. These things allow the bullet to tip when it gets started with very, very little to straighten it up. That thin GC back there does little in that regard after a certain pressure level. The percent of bearing is a little over 51% which is too low for good results (based on frnkore's drawing). There have been "fat" molds made which will cure those problems though (provided you know what to do with one). If Ben were to freechec that plain base version with the right alloy, I suspect he could go to about 2,100 fps with decent accuracy. If you have a tight bore rifle, then it would help also and you would be able to go faster yet.

When I read the above, it looks like an answer to a question that I never asked?
I have absolutely no interest in shooting the 413' at 2100 fps ?
Others have asked questions about shooting the bullet faster, not me however.
I wouldn't waste powder , lead, primers, and my time shooting the 311413 at 2100 fps.

I'm enjoying what I have right now.

Ben,
I'm liking that load! If it shoots that good .....why faster? The only problem I see is you may have to switch to "Bench Rest style" targets! You're tearing up your aim point!
Ben, what range is that from? if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks
Jim

Jim,

10 rounds at 50 yards.

Yes, why faster? ?.......I'm not interested in 2,000 fps.

The statement wasn't directed at you.... at all. Other people before you, have plain based this and other designs.... it was for them..........................................

Need my own range. Public range I use does not have 50 yard targets; goes from 100 to 700 yards on the rifle range. 25 to 75 yard targets on the pistol range (no rifles allowed).
Used to think range tests were barely worth doing at anything short of 100 yards. Now that I can barely make out the 10 ring at 100 yards and am lucky if I can do my part to hit it 10% of the time, I now see the practicality in utilizing a 50 yard target.

A good example I guess, of how as we get older we see objects less clearly and problems and situations more clearly.

Nice shootin' Ben.

To me it is also a matter of doing what pleases you and ignoring what it takes to please others.

When it comes to vol, I am reminded that most automobiles have the capacity to go at least 100 miles an hour. That said, very few ever do, and probably most are driven at an average of much less than 50 miles an hour.
To each his own!

It all boils down to application.....your intended use........ as well as your delivery system.

WOW, I'll have to remember that quotable quote that's a good one.

"and problems and situations more clearly."
Yeah; I kind of figure that is the reason we "can get older"....if we didn't see those clearly we would be pushing up Daisies pretty darn quick ( & I don't me the famous air guns)

I cast some GC 413's today, and two different batches of different weights of HP. The Pin that Buckshot furnished when he HP'd the mold is adjustable, and I cast one batch very deep and the other less than half of the body length. It is a bear of a mold to cast and get good fill out by keeping the mold and pin hot enough. Will try Bens loadings as soon as I get a chance to load load some. I cast these at about 16 BH, sized to .310, lubed with white lable 2500, and overcoated them with BensLL. Will be probably end of next week before I get a chance to shoot, but am looking forward to the test.
