Made a few bullets up average 170 gr. I want to try this bullet in my s&w 686 with 6inch barrel. The 357 hurts my old crippled hands. So I'm wanting to use 38s. Where I hunt there is seldom a shot over 50 yards if that far. What I would like to know is what muzzle velocity,I should try for. Thanks for any advice. This is a plain base bullet. Johnny

In the 38 Special , try 5.0 Unique with the 429' , it should do the job if you can place the bullet. Some manuals list this as a +P load. In your 6" barrel, that should give you about 925 fps.

Sounds pretty low to me. But what do I know?

The recoil you can tolerate will dictate the limit of velocity for the bullet.
" For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction ".

At large, whereabouts unknown.
Ben and Bretts advice is sound. What bullets and powders do you have available? You could also get a bit higher velocities and lower recoil with a lighter bullet such as 358477.

With a heavy-for-caliber Keith bullet you do not need high velocity. #358429 at 900 fps in the .38 Special at 1.55" OAL fired from a 6-inch barrel will penetrate 40 inches of water jugs with 5 grains of Unique, 6 grains of Herco, 10 grains of #2400 or 12 grains of 4227

I have the 358156. But I would like to try the heavy bullets. I have 4227, unique,2400,blue dot. I like the 158 gr with gas checks in the 357 in revolver and my rossi. The heavy just intrigues me. Lol. No gas checks to mess with..
