Lyman 35887

I just added this bullet, the Lyman 35887, but I cannot find much information about it. Specifically, I cannot find what alloy it would have been cast with. I don't have any manuals that list it. Can someone who has it in one of their manuals share which alloy it was regulated for and the weight with that alloy? The sample I have is the heavy version, which should be 140 grains?

Thanks,

John

Hello,
The Master Sheet I have shows 358087 at 125 gr. and the 35887 at 140 gr. For 38 Special use I would crimp right at the end of the Major Diameter Band. My experience is pushing the non hollow base design too deep in the case can cause bulging on certain mfg. of brass as you start to push the bullet into the taper of the case web. Hollow base will just taper in, solid base will not.

number-2 or lino-type.
why lyman would use lino-type for 38 special wad cutters and number-2 for the 9mm or rifle bullets at 2200+ fps. is beyond my comprehension, but they did.

Lyman is like S&W......they move in mysterious ways.

Maybe on those days it was the 'Alloy de jour', or maybe a coin toss determined the choice. GMBTA.

i have a feeling they used what the tech was handed, and those were the two alloys they had on hand.
that or the dude forgot and just called it one or the other... LOL
