Just find myself lusting over this. The New Mauser 98 STD Expert.
Fully-milled action made of special steel, cold-hammered forged barrel, optimised trigger, plasma nitride steel parts, front sling swivel, front and rear sight on the barrel ring and finally a horizontal three-position safety. Hand picked blank, Walnut stock. Each rifle is unique and its parts hand fitted with each other. $12,000

458 Winchester?!? Beautiful Rifle, and I also love that African Safari style. And for some reason, I just think a 458 would be a CB Hoot! 'Course, both my 45-70s are, and the 458 is just a bigger 45!

Probably just me being wrong, but I was thinking 308 win, or a 9.3X62. It is offered in those.

308 would be my choice. I've searched high & low, looked everywhere . . . Not a single Wooly Mammoth to be found anywhere.

BUT THE WOOD? THE HAND CHECKERING. THE DEEP POLISHED HIGH QUALITY FINISH. Makes me want to sell everything and get one then just sit there and pet it..

Hmmm. Fiver called it--I would go Win CRF 70 and not look back. Before that Tikka came along in 243 a few months ago, that was the route I planned to take for the 243. Not the first time a pretty Euro vixen seduced me.

The 458 IS A cast bullet dreal. As is the 375!!!!

Trail boss make for a 45/70 ish gun that usually has a stiff bbl and usually shoots way better and easier then one would initially expect.
I have a good friend that loves loves these bug bores. Even has and shoots a 500,550 and 600 Bolt Rifle! All with Cast and "Cheerios".

There is something to be said about sweat equity.
While I haven't done that with a rifle stock (not checkering but the sweat equity part),
I HAVE done it (the sweat equity part) with many things that are worth much less...:p

Mine would be 358 win.

...Actually I did have a rifle in 358, and it was custom built on a 1909 Mauser war horse receiver. The wood was pretty, but sadly the builder could have done a better job with the mechanics. I never did get it to feed CBs reliably from the Mag, but jacketed bullets worked well. A friend bought it from me, along with the dies/molds I acquired for it (he is a caster). I suspect he never has fired it, as he has never mentioned anything about it since he bought it.
