Plain Base Gas Checks?

Several years ago I got a NOE plain based 165 Ranch Dog mold for my young Grandsons 30-30 to build lighter loads for the skinny kid to practice with. I got to wondering about it in my 308 for deer hunting, it shoots good powder coated but would like to speed it up a bit. Ordered some plain base gas checks to try, but they took so much pressure going through the sizing die I about had to jump up and down on the press handle. Afraid I was going to break the die or the Rock Chucker I quit using them except on standard GC bullets. Is this normal or did the supplier ship the wrong checks?

lubricate them a little with lanolin or something and apply them to just-cast bullets that are still soft.

Yup lube helps. Lee push-thru are tapered at the start that helps get past the 'step' but I still had trouble when I tried them (Sage's Al).

I've never tried commercial PB checks, only my home made popcan checks. I've found, they are more easily installed base- first through a Lee- die. If you're working with fat bullets, starting with a .314 sizer is helpful (if you have one). And having a NOE top- punch holder for the ram (and a suitable top punch) makes base- first sizing a breeze.

I've found the PBGC to greatly increase the tolerance of lubed bullets. However, I've not observed any advantages with such checks on PC bullets. They seem to have the same tolerance to the feistier loads, with or without the PBGC.

If you haven't experimemted much with coated PB bullets (no check) at higher load levels, this is worth a try. I've achieved very good accuracy at 2000+fps in .308 win and .30-06.

Thanks guys. I haven't cast any in a while, but may try heating some of the PC'd ones and putting the check on before they harden up fully.

The plain base GC design, requires a soft bullet alloy, BHN 10 or less.
The one's I've done (44 and 41), I used a soft range scrap alloy that measured 7.
