Primers

Someone the other day was looking for primers, Cabela's has S&B primers in stock. SR, LR & LP for $21.24 a brick. I tried these this summer and they were pretty consistent. I would recommend them.

Any more opinions on the LR primers? I could use some more bricks. Would like to see them go down to $15/brick, though.

My dad says I have some scotch in me, but I know it's whiskey and beer.

My Biggest quest is a deal on large pistol primers: I use them both for my 45 auto as well as my rifles because I shoot mostly light loads with plain base bullets in my rifles.
They seem to shoot better than large rifle primers in those light loads!

We think brisance is why, David.

I've recently started using LP instead of LR primer for popgun loads under heavy bullets in big cases with fast powder and found a marked improvement in groups and bullet stability with otherwise marginally stabilized bullets, so while nothing says it's always true, often (and so far every time for me) it is.

Ian, I didn't mean that, I meant the quality of the primers.

Right, sorry. I felt certain you'd know a LOT more about brisance than most any of us weekend plinkers and dinkers, but couldn't reconcile that in my head with your response to JWP's comment about preferring LP for light rifle target loads.

I have had good luck with both LP and LR in my loads.
sometimes all I need is a powder amount change and I get the same results.
and in other cases one is far superior to the other.
the one that seems to baffle everybody is using SR magnum primers in the tiny cases like the 25-20, 38 special, and 30 carbine to get better accuracy [shrug]

Ian, I think I posted the reply before I read JWP's post and was responding more to yodogsandman. I am sure that I don't know anymore than anyone else, my wife says I am wrong all the time.

it is in some of the loads.
I think the 25-20 is more a fan of it cause I'm using nearly a case full of AA-2230 under a plain base 72gr boolit.
the 30 carbine is a case full of 2400.
or 3.5grs of pistol powder.
that one I am sure is bumping the [plain base once again] 312 boolit out into the cylinder throat just barely enough to ignite the powder on the way.
I would really like to see the pressure trace on that one I bet it is a straight up and down spike.

now the 38 load is an anomaly.
a 148gr button nose wad cutter on top of 5. [sumthin I'd have to go look] grs of unique with the federal sr magnum match primer.
[you gotta do something with them when you have like 15-K of the things right?]
it keeps all of the holes in the same area time after time so I'm not arguing with it.
and it definitely is NOT a target type load.

Small pistol is all I use in the Hornet and .218 Bee. It drops group size by half in every load I have ever used it in .

All the S&B primers have been 1st rate. I have SP ,LP , SR, LR and all seem to be the same quality .

Got a lot of SP, LP & SR, mags too, but was really getting short on LR. Good thing a Cabelas is only about 5 miles away, so I went and picked up 5 bricks and saved on the usual internet fees. At less than $22 a brick, it is quite a savings over the other brands. But for the most part I have always been lucky with primers, no bad lots. I do as probably most people, try and keep so Federals, Win, Rem & CCIs on hand. Never know when that is all the difference in a great load.

That's a great price for Cabela's. I was in the Buda store the last time about three years ago and they were asking $40+ and actually had a few bricks on hand, but for that price I left them alone.

Edward, You are correct regarding SP primers in Hornet/K's. They just work and are
more accurate.
