So this won't be as pretty as Ben's posts...but it will be to the point.
As you know Johnson's Liquid Paste Wax has been placed on the EPA extinct list..

So what can newbees do to approximate Ben's Liquid Lube...

Well this is what I tried..this concoction I call BenDan's Liguid Lube ...

It's ingredients are made up of what you should have on hand if you have been making Ben's Red. and BLL.

Alox, Jonhsons Paste Wax and some place around the ranch Pure Gum Spirits Turpentine.

The formula is easy, this is by volume..
1 part Johnsons Paste Wax
1 part Turps
2.5-3 parts Alox

What I did was take an old container and put a plastic spoon level of JPW in and ten a level plastic spoon of Turps...the wax will blend almost immediately.

You will end up with a grey slurry when mixed.
Then I put in the Alox and stirred.
It will appear to be stringy at first but will mix and turn to a semi liquid with about the same consistency as BLL ....

Obviously you can customize this to your liking.

The above recipe will drip just like the original..

OK so Imgur is not working..

I will load photos later ..

But here are the results

I shot these out of my 03a4 clone Noe 311332
ten shots with 13.8 grs Universal and only a medium coat of BDLL
qUb4ZIs.jpg

the groups with the stand alone BDLL were about the same or smaller than the two five shot groups with BR and BLL ...no leading .

If you would like to try it I used an old coffee cup and a plastic spoon.. it makes enough to coat at least 50-100 bullets

I will post pictures of the groups when I can.

I shot two five shot groups because I wanted to see if they got worse , they improved instead..

This formula dries fast, really fast and leaves the same residue on the targets.

Pleas try it and let us know what your results are...Dan

Pix Me three.

Looks good, might just be the quick ticket for my new plain based mold try outs. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting to Note: That turps were used in many of the old Lead bullet cleaning formulas of olden days.
One of my favorite de-leading formulas is 1/3 Pure turps/ 1/3 Hoppes #9 and / 1/3 Kroil. Found that in an old gunsmithing manual.

While essentially your liquid lube, Dan, is similar to the venerable 45/45/10: The lack of boiling off the mineral spirits in the Johnson's paste wax, along with the addition of the pure Turps Gives it a better viscosity& faster dry time (....but alas no fancy co-polyemers to make it the same as BLL)
However I feel it may be the best substitute so far.
I think we need a bunch of folks to start testing it. I'm sure it should be the folks that didn't horde Onestep floor wax!:p
I will be whipping up a batch myself!
Please keep in mind that real Turps are hard to come by these days Much is synthetic any more.
I use Pure Artist Turps ( Grumbacher) for my De-lead formulae from Michael's Art supply

Nice shooting! Scope? Irons?
Can you just use a single coat of BLL or your BDLL Lube on rifle bullets?
I have an 8mm with a large bore and no sizing dies big enough. (329). As close as I can get is .325. I do have a Lee push through .329 die but again need lube. I guess I can pan lube.
Also another question. NOE makes great Rifle expander plugs. Again not big enough. Does any budy else make stuff like that? Even custom stuff?
I hope that makes sense to you!
Thanks
Jon

Jon....it does appear that you are in a black hole..nothing at NOE ..( Awhile back I called Al about the possibility of a custom size and he said he subs those out)
As for the Lyman "m" dies they also skirt around that size....
May be some one here with a lathe could make you one...

I think I would do a double application rather than a single heavy...on rifle bullets

Quicksylver,
Thanks for the reply.
Thinking I will pan lube the big Lee Kar bullets. The .329 Lee push thru die will seat the gas check so pan lubing comes next or two coats of BLL or BDLL Lube. Maybe get an oversize M type and make it the correct dia.
I have two custom Mausers and a 8X56 RD Rolling block to get shooting. So a fun summer is coming.
Thanks,
Jon

Jon,
For years I loaded my Saurer 98 Mauser with out a formal expanding tool I used an old cold punch that i would open up the mouth of the case so It could accept that lee 329 bullet. I pushed the case in to it by hand. Once I reached the point of proper enlargement I marked the punch shaft with a fine sharpie marker
The rifle still shot very accurately

Isn't it interesting, that sometimes it just doesn't take $1,000.00 worth of reloading tools to make good accurate loads ? ?
