Remington Autos

Personally Im not the biggest semi auto fan. Never owned a 1100, 11/87 a 74, 7400, m8 or many of the 22 autos. Wait I did own a couple nylon 66's. Damn if they don't point great!! I really love the 14, 141, 760 & 7600 pumpers!! Mostly because they point so well. Same for yhe 870. Its just an extension of me. Fits me very well.

Anyhow some years back I bought a bunch of stuff including two rifles completely torn down parts in baggies & boxes. One I was interested in was a Savage 340 in Hornet. Its still a work in progress & kinda stalled. But I found all missing parts. Assembled the fire control and have fired the gun. Needs more work.
The second gun was a Remington 742 in '06. Only missing butt stock. I started assembling it mostly ta see if I even had all parts. Turns out, I was only missing butt stock & 2 roll pins. One for rear site & one for bolt handle. Anyhow, I got it assembled and seemingly shootable last week when I fit a old Rem 870 Express butt to yhe 742 receiver.

Looks ta me like it was stored in soft gun cast & it got wet & rusted badly. Both sides of receiver and barrel.
I was able ta strip it mostly to bare steel. Tonight applied 3 & Forth coats of 4/40 blueing. Looks passable.

Here it was after fitting butt.

Here is istoday.

Barrel codes makes it a October 1960 manufacture.

I have cycled it with dummies. Hoping to test fite soon.

I'm not an autoloader fan either, and generally not a big Remington fan. That said, the Nylon 66 is the only semi auto .22 rifle I would trust to be reliable besides Ruger 10/22s.

You'll like that Savage 340 when you get it finished.

me either!!!

BUT i have the Remington m14 and the m760. i can't get into buying a m7600. a m141 would be nice to own. i bought the m14 in 30 Rem for the fluted magazine tube. i just like it.

i have a Savage m340 in 30-30, but i never used it. my sons, a cousin or three and friends have.

i have two Ruger 10/22s, a Browning A-5 Humpback in Sweet Sixteen and 12ga (Dad [RIP] and Grandpap's [RIP] guns).

I have a 141 I haven't done much with, but I can say I have to wonder hoe the Winchester and Marlin lever guns got and remained so popular when those were available. Every bit as good and arguably better.

For me its just how well and quick they point. This 742 has same atributes. Im watching a peep. But Ill need to D&T to mount it.

Ill wait to see, be sure it functions. Im pretty sure it will it was taken apart to re blue. (My assumption) that wouldn't have been done if it wasnt a shooter.

Remington hit a grand slam when they finalized the profile of the stock & receiver of the 870. They went on to duplicate that basic profile across many models. That form is amazingly universal and fits a large percentage of users.

Is that the one with the weird bolt? I had one years ago in 30-06. The bolt was messed up when I got it. The lugs were very galled. After a bunch of smoothing i got it to feed and lock the bolt. It would close on a no go if you let the bolt slam home. But if you let it down on the gauge it would almost close. It diffidently was hard on brass from stretching, but I sized it to the gun and it was fine. It really liked the Sierra 165gr sbt.

Make sure to run some grease on those lugs.

These are the smaller and more numerous Lugs. Yes they can gall the receiver at the back of its throw. This one has marks but is not excessive. (Pretty much all of them had this to some extent.) Yes 100% proper Maintaince kept them running longer and properly. I dont have '06 guages. (Just 223/556 & 308. The barrels interior is very good.

Gun feeds well from
Magazine with 1/2/3 or 4 rounds.

I found a steel ten round mag. Hopefully it feeds as well.

the old Mossberg 500 fits my bill. well, it used to........dang stroke!!! ;)

I have never owned or shot a pump- action rifle, but always thought it was an interesting concept for a hunting rifle.
Let us know how it works!

i grew up on Remington 760s and Winchester m94s. it used to be rare to own bolt action in the PA's woods. even then it was mostly sporterized military rifles. then in 90s, "everybody" had bolt actions.

The Peep arrived this AM! Looks good no screws I assumed as they was not in pics but thats fine cause I think all I have is 6/40 taps no 6/48 which is common for these.
I measured and searched for positional pictures. Most use the peep thats on top not side mount as I have. So I decided a position and D&T first hole then id off that hole for second and D&T that one. Came out great. I removed rear site and installed plug screws.
