Remington Rolling Block

Is there a 1/4 minute adjustable rear sight that will go on the rear of a barrel?

Want to put a target adjustable rear sight directly on the barrel that is looking where the barrel is pointing rather than shimming a tang sight.

quarter minute? You do realize that equates to .0025" (two and one half thousandths) on a 36" sight radius.....answer is no. High end tang sights used for BPCRS might get you half minute

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
back in the day they used to use "tube sights" that were basically a hollow tube with front and rear sight in it set up in Unertl style mounts. That might be something like what you want...maybe. 1/4 minute is doable, but find on that "clicks" like that might be a problem.

Interesting question, Bud - to which I have no answer, but I have two RBs and am - have always been - fascinated with them and have wondered what the heck I'm going to do with them.

That draws me to every post I see concerning them. I'm sure I don't shoot at your level, but I've wondered how practical a barrel-mounted peep sight, or receiver-mounted peep sight (Gasp! Not sure I could bring myself to drill extra holes in one) would be. I DO know that the issue sights on the 7mm SM model leave a fair bit to be desired, which has been one of the (many) things which has prevented me from daydreaming too much about spending much on building myself a CB-only 30/30 or 38-55 on one. What's the point if I can't shoot it reasonably well?

I have a BPCR with a MVA Buffalo Soule rear sight. It's design easily allows one MOA vertical adjustment, can fudge a 1/2 out of it it the difference is split from one staff mark to the next. Where I am going with this is that even with MOA and the rifle that it is on, I feel I shoot it pretty well,, but am I good enough to hold 1/4 MOA with it at whatever distance the targets are being engaged at. Nope. I wish it were otherwise. If someone can and needs that fine of adjustment on a barrel sight to take full advantage of their skill level, not being smart here, then dang, I am seriously impressed.

I have seen and shot a Rolling Block with a MVA Rough and Ready rear sight in conjunction with a Beech front sight. If I were ever to build a 50-70 RB that would be my sight combo.

For clarification.
  1. The Remington Rolling Block is a forged action with easy tolerances. The tang can be slightly off center and slightly concave more on one side that the other with it still being within tolerance.
  2. The factory sights being on the barrel obviates this problem.
  3. For extended ranges when mounting a tang sight, a light lean in the base causes the windage going left or right as you go up. You will have a standard windage adjustment to zero at each range.
  4. Trial and error shimming of the sight base will correct the leaning. But this takes time and is not totally satisfactory.
My thought is finding a sight like the 1903 Springfield rear sight that mounts on the barrel that swivels for windage. Possibly this sight will work if you mill it.

MVA Rough and Ready rear sight is good, but no windage. Is there a similar sight with windage?

The Unertl tube sight is a good answer. Will it be legal for BCPR matches?

The Buffington sight as used on later Trapdoors would be as good as you're going to find for a period correct barrel sight.

A tube sight might be legal, but I don't think click adjustable external mounts will be.
