Ruger American rimfire

I stopped by my friends gun store today. He had a rimfire rifle on sale. I have been wanting a bolt action 22rf for awhile. My last one was a Romanian training rifle in 22. It did not shoot well at all so it went down the road. So the price was right and I picked this Ruger up.

I got a scope base ordered already for it. I have a 1.5-4.4x that I have that is going on it. The receiver is grooved and drilled for bases. I don't like the old groove scope ring mounting.

So hopefully I get out this next week to try it out. It really needs to be broke in. The trigger seems fine but the bolt is awful. My guess it will smooth out as it is shot.

Anyone else have one of these?

Not yet.

My current .22 RF dilemma is, do I buy a Ruger American rimfire, or a Magpul X-22 stock and a .920"X20" bull barrel for the Ruger 10/22. Decisions, decisions . . .

I am a 22 Magnum nut. Frankly there isnt any common rifles Chambered that I dont or haven't had. Even some fancys like that H&R auto, Anshutz's, a Kimber & a Bruno. Plus Marlins, Mossbergs, Brownings, Winchesters and Remingtons. I love the lilest magnum!!

When I learned Ruger was bring out this American Bolt in a short barrel I was @ my dealer the day they was released. My buddy and I both bought rifles. They only had a few short barrels and was sold out by the time we got ours. So I clopped my barrel before I ever shot it!

I can honestly tell uou it is THE MOST ACCURATE 22 Mag bolt gun I ever owned! It will shoot under 1" with bullets it likes and 1.25/1.5 with everything I have shot in it!

I tjink you will be happy Tomme. Best of luck with it!!

A couple of years ago I purchased a Ruger American .22 LR. It was the stainless model with walnut stock, apparently a limited production run. I was a bit skeptical about its accuracy potential, but it has been a great shooter. Mine has Weaver bases and an old 6-18x Leupold. I've thought of selling it a couple of times, but keep coming to my senses as I know I would regret selling it.

Looking this over last night I found some things I need to fix. It has very sharp burrs all over the bolt. It scrapes lead off of the bullets in the mag as you cycle it. That won't take much to correct. And the front sight almost fell off. Another 1/2 turn of the screw it would have. Someone must have forgot to tighten it.

My only .22lr bolt gun is a Kimber 22 Hunter.
I have heard good things about the Ruger.

I scoped the barrel. It has not been cleaned. The junk on the crown came off when I ran a brush through it several times after this.

I have it in a 17hmr... special run with a 16in bbl, threaded. Very accurate, and once broken in, very smooth.

I ordered a new scope for it. The 4.5x was not enough. I ordered a 3-12x bushnell AR Optic.

I got it mounted in some old burris tactical med height 6 screw rings. It looks pretty good. I was worried it was going to look way too big for the gun. But the AR Optics are scaled down in size to fit the one piece scope mounts for the AR platform. These things are very clear for the price of them. aND they are not made in China. Korea but that is way better than Chinese.

Well that did not go as I wanted. While the scope was very clear and easy to focus it has a super critical eye box. This was the worst I have seen in a scope. Any movement in your head and it would turn to looking through a coke bottle bottom. And the side focus would not hold still. So back it goes.

I ordered a Burris 4.5x14x42 to replace it. I will say, scopes are getting out of control on the prices like primers are. Close but even all the no name brands are getting crazy prices.

And the rifle does not like Aguila SV 40gr. I am too embarrassed to even post the target. But they would take up a whole paper plate at 50yds. But it really liked the plated HV 40gr. About a 3/4" group at 50 yds.

I got in the longer stock insert today. Feel much better than the compact version.

There are a few good deals out there right now on rimfire ammo. Walmart has the federal automatch for $18.97/325 box. Shawarms has Norma Tac-22 for $2.99/50 box. I just ordered 2000rds of Aguila 22 high vel 40gr for $143 delivered from Target Sports USA. This Aguila shoots very good in this rifle. It is $24.99/250rd box plus tax here.

Now to get a few more mags for it. I picked up a bx-15 rd mag last week. I really like this one It doesn't look stupid hanging really far out like the other higher cap mags.

It's good to know those Rugers are good. I strongly prefer bolt action .22s and for a few years now it seems like evey offering was expensive, high end stuff or it was junk. Nice to have good and affordable ones.
