Well I love ta help but the OP has me completely lost...

Ill just watch from here.

The OP said he put the Colt PTED in the photo ONLY for size comparison. It has nothing to do with the 223 expander spud. I agree with Rob, that this 223 spud expands the case neck, as well as flares the case mouth.

Yea, I noticed, but mentioned after original posting..
Making for a more confusing read. Its hard enough deciphering from afar, when ya don't get accurate information to make an assumption.

The stem does appear a "310" assembly. I don't have a 223 Rem in a. 310 die set to compare.

while others think it's for a 310 set, I am not so sure.
I think it's to be screwed into a Lyman M die or other brand RCBS? CH? Herters? ya know a funky expander/flare die is right up ole' George's alley...it's be the world's Best expander, ya know, LOL.

Put the scale on the screen, and too small to be a Layman or RCBS expander.

The die body used for a custom plug is normally of little importance. When I make M-dies for fellow shooters, I use whatever old die they give me or I have in my scrap die box. The .218 Bee die set I just sold to a friend of CW's used the full length resizing die as the M-die. The slug had a 1/8" (maybe it was 3/16" stem that slipped into the collet for the original decapping pin Others I've made were made from a 9/16" SAE fine bolt because the die companies have a love affair with that thread. Other have been made from 1/2-20 bolt. The die body, as long as it will accommodate the M-die slug function, is just a method to attach the slug to the press. The expander slug in this thread is just another type of slug.
