Stuck case in sizing die

It wasn’t me but one of the guys I was introducing to casting on Saturday. 223 die, said he removed the decapping rod but now has the base of the case really mangled. I’ve never had to remove a stuck case, any thoughts?

With the decapping rod pulled out of the way drill and tap the case thru the primer pocket with a 1/4" hole. Get a few washers with holes that are slightly larger than the case diameter. Get one more that's a larger diameter than the other washer holes. Screw the bolt thru the single washer and begin to crank the bolt. it should pull the case out. Just don't use a bolt that's going to hit the decapping rod.

A 12 point 1/2" socket works well to pull against also .

If it's a Lee die just tap the decapping rod back down .

I've used a pin punch once or twice also in place of the Lee system .
D&T then pulling is more elegant and far less likely to lead to "oops dinged a thread" .

The stuck case remover kit is a simple cap much like the ram cap for the pocket swaging tool with a #3 drill bit , 1/4-20 tap , a 1/4-20 bolt and a washer . Odds are pretty good if you have a 1/2" deep socket you have a 1/4-20 or 28 bolt an 1/8-1/4" longer than the socket .

A stuck case remover is akin to car insurance, don't really like paying for it, but when you need it, it is nice to have.
Stick a case, take the kit out, drill, tap, extract, done. Within 5-10 min you're back in business.

Everybody will stick a case in a die, sooner or latter, so buy an RCBS stuck case remover now. They work.
I think I have one, never used it! I’m going to go dig it out and give it to my buddy.

Yep, I have one. It was my late FIL’s and having never used it, forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder! :)

Step One, go online and order a new decapping rod for your die.

Step two, beat that stuck case out with a hammer.

Step three, reload some other type of cartridge for a few days while you wait for your brand new decapping rod to arrive.

Note: While drilling, tapping, and then pulling the stuck case is a much more elegant solution, I would propose that beating the stuck case into submission with a stout hammer is by far a more cathartic experience!

That works on a lot of things, actually.

1) Big Hammer
2) Kroil
3) "Creative Language" I've actually had to invent a few new words on extra tough applications.

Apply all three in liberal doses until the offending part surrenders.

I don't remember ever having stuck a case, but have come close. My day is coming, I s'ppose.

My first thought would be to screw the die in the press upside down (from the bottom), insert a punch/rod and use the ram - after a good soak with Kroil. May or may not be room on the underside of the press, but I'd surely give it a look.

One other that happens sooner or later in addition to sticking a case in a die is picking up a cast bullet with our bare fingers that we thought was cool enough to handle.

I use Lee or Reading Dies.
So before I mangle the case head entirely.
I remove the cullet, then beat the de capper with 2 whacks of plastic dead blow hammer. Falls out the bottom with the case.
Then I put the case with the de capper in the single Stage press, with no die in the top. Drop a little case lube down the neck. Lift the case up thru the top of the press.enough to grab the de capper.
Grab the de capper with taped up vice grips and slowly pull the handle. Comes right out when lubed.
Done it 4 times solution worked every time. Easy peasy!!

That is the only issue with the spray on or roll around method, You need to get lube on every one then wait for dry time.
Dummy me runs short of cases. Then picks up a dry one or two just to round or the numbers, or use up a primer, etc. sometimes.
Then thinks ok , there should be enough left in the die to size just one more. Nope! @*$#!
I really like my lanolin alcohol spray lube, especially for long sessions. But.....
Guess a tin of imperial at 10 bucks would be worth keeping under the press for just those instances.
