I find myself looking at a new caliber.

Let me back up. I really like the 6.5 Grendel. I have had an AR and still have a Howa Mini Bolt.
It being one of my most accurate rifles helps. ;)
Being that I shot my biggest Bodied and Racked bucks doesn't hurt.

Last year I decided to tear it down and rebuild as what it should be. A LWT hunter. I changed bottom
Metal and optic. Its my favorite deer rifle.

Making it left me with a good amount of accessory parts. I had a Boyds Target Lam stock. A 20MOA, EGW pic base and DIP Bottom Metal with magazine latch upgrade and four magazines. (I also have a good optic.)
So, I have been considering a Brownells barreled action. In 20" HB 6.5 Grendel. Making a "target" gun. For about 400$, I can have this rifle all setup.

A Few days ago, I was talking to a new hunter trying to decide on a caliber and rifle. We talked about quite a few rifles and Cartritages. He wanted a AR and because of a bad accident had rebuilt shoulders and collar bones. He cannot tolerate recoil so needs light recoil and wants as much preformance he can muster. All things considered, My suggestion to him is 6.5 Grendel.
We also spoke about the 300 blk, 7.62x39, 350 Legend, 6.8 SPC, 277 Wolverine, 25/45 Sharps and 6mm ARC. (22 CF's are not legal here for deer)
This talk opened my eyes to the ARC. I had dismissed it. But looking "threw his eyes" and listening to some Hornady PodCasts the last couple
Days. Man Im pretty much sold! Largly because I have decided to make a purchase to utilize my parts. My stock is for a Howa Mini so thats what it's gonna be. Howa is factory chambering the 6.5 Grendel, 6 ARC, 223, 7.62x39, 350 Legend and 300 blk.

For my purposes, this will be a Target/Hunter. My initial thoughts where medium range. But unlike the Grendel, this ARC with heaviest bullets is gaining much respect out to and past 1000 yards. Surprising to me. IINM its twisted 1:7.5.

Has anyone here shot or own one of these?

I do, and yes. Boltgun pressure is 10K higher than gas gun pressure. Its extremely efficient with very few loads exceeding 30gr of powder, so doesn't put a lot of heat in barrels.

85gr Nosler Partition in the 6ARC may be exactly what he needs.

I have 2 6mm ARC rifles, one is an AR and the other is a Howa 1500. My daughter's absolutely love to shoot it and so do I. It's a great rifle even at gas gun velocities. If you're shooting it at bolt gun pressures it will do 95% of what a 243 Winchester will, with 18 gr less powder.

We've dropped many deer with the 6mm ARC, my oldest got her 2nd deer with the Howa. It was a 20 yd run and done.

Awesome!

We still has Forster dies on sale, so today I ordered another set for the six arc and surprisingly it was $30 cheaper than the Grindel. Don't really know why but it was, I grabbed 100 pieces of brass and a Lee trimmer. I have to talk to my FFL and make sure they have there ffl with Brownells. I'll buy the barrel action and have it sent in.

I bought hornady dies, normally I'm loading a speer 100 gr SPBT using LEVERevolution powder. My daughter shot her deer with a 108 ELD, mine were the Speers. We've shot deer from 20 yds to just past 200 and every one has been stone dead. You'll love it.

I bought a 6ARC in a Savage Switchback and stuck it in a Oryx chassis. I love this rifle!! I to have a sensitive shoulder (total shoulder repair) and with the extra weight of the Orxy chassis I have learned to shoot the rifle off my shoulder a bit with excellent accuracy. My 6.5 CM thumps me a bit but I load down and can tolerate it. I'm a paper puncher and only out to 100 yrds so I don't need the terminal velocity I'd need on animals.
6 ARC in a bolt gun is a "gas".
P.S. Think I'll look at building a AR in that caliber as well.

I have been shooting a 6 PPC since the mid 90's in a SAKO varmint and it has been a great caliber. I like it so much I am considering a 6 ARC to shoot heavier bullets as 55 gr. and 70 gr,. are the two weights I shoot in the PPC.

Gary thanks for the link!

I'm going to plead some ignorance here. I know what the 6mm ARC is, but I have no personal experience. However, it looks a LOT like the 6mm PPC, a great cartridge.

The 6mm family has a lot going for it. Just a little more diameter and weight than the .22’s, Generally good ballistic coefficient, light recoil and a good reputation for accuracy.

The 7mm family is a bit more my speed for its attributes but that’s not a slight toward the 6mm’s.

The 6 has it all over a 22,,as far as wind drift.
Of course, thats short range br shooting100/200/300 yards.
Nowadays, people are using these long heavy bullets that look like a javelin,,ive never kicked that can down the road.
Don't, it's easier on your wallet if you leave the javelins alone

This was and remains the one stumbling block. Mine is or has been with in this criteria... 300 yards and thats stretching things.

But, I have set a goal ta get with some friends and shoot at longer ranges. This can be a tool to that end. In mean time, it should be fun and is something I could use and utalize here.

I started working on my Boyds stock tooday.
I had re worked and sprayed it Green ta hunt with and decided this was more if a target rifle now so that Royal Laminate would be preferred!!
Its deep purple and blk laminated. It wasn't great but with my massaging to reveal different contours and layers. I think its looking better.
Sorry no pics yet, its dark and my work bench is cluttered so pics I took are hard ta see what your looking at. So maybe tomorrow Ill fetch better ones.
Started with coarse then 100g then 220 grit and last was 400 grit. I just whiskered it and hung it ta dry. Its time ta make dinner. Maybe Ill sand again after dishes but more likely tomorrow.
But its looking pretty good!

Since those pics, The stock has 9 coats of oil. Its much deeper and darker looking. Much better to my eye. I have a lil more to do and Ill have a video.

I tried to order the Barreled action from Brownells. But they are out of stock. Not expecting shipment until late March. A viewer suggested I watch Gun Broker. Why I didnt think of the same escapes me.. But today I found one and I ordered it! So I hope to see it in a week or so.

Thanks to cartridges such as the 6mm ARC a lot of 6mm long range bullets have been developed. Everything that makes ARC bullets better also make the bullets I plan to try in my .243 better. I just bought a stainless steel factory Remington 700 takeoff barrel in .243, going to replace a damaged blued .243 barrel. It has a 1:8 twist which ought to stabilize almost anything I'll probably ever shoot through it. The gun will strictly be a jacketed bullet shooter.
