The Marlin 30/30, Micro Groove

That 165 really wants to shoot at 26 grains. The wild flyer could easily have been a real bad hidden void in the base. In any event, you got something that will work.

Those Marlins can sometimes embarrass a decent bolt-action once you get the load and bullet fine-tuned. They can sometimes drive you nuts, too. I have a literal tack driver and one just like it that shoots so-so, need to look at the junk hanging off the barrel on that one and straighten out the pressure points.

Thanks, guys!
I never expected to get such good results so quickly. In fact, I didn’t expect to see groups near the 1 MOA territory at all. This little carabine is really growing on me!

My gut feeling is, the limiting factor now is mainly the guy behind the trigger. I’ve become a little more familiar with the ergonomics of the gun during this little adventure. But I think I need to shoot it more before I can really refine accuracy beyond the level I’m seeing now. A flier, or bad group, could easily be caused by me.

Next time, I’ll load a bunch of RD bullets with 25 and 26grs (and maybe some 25,5), just to expand my data. Then, I’ll probably just choose a load, and stick with it for a while.

Oh, one more thing to check..... I’ve only single loaded these cartridges. I don’t know if they’ll actually cycle. If not, I’ll take up Brad’s trick with trimming back the brass.

Note to self: you need to get a 30/30 levergun.

If they are chambering fine then they will feed. I trimmed my brass a little short due to the nose dimensions of the bullet and the throat being very short. My rifle was engraving the nose on chambering which is not a good thing in lever actions. Even a little long and it won’t chamber at all!

Try a group loading from a full magazine. As the magazine empties the barrel harmonics change. The group may show this.

the mag tube is ''attached'' to the barrel in 2 different places.
and it has the chance of touching the fore stock and consequently the barrel over another 10"s or so.
there is lots of places to mess with the harmonics.

He can only have five long guns, which is unfortunate when one gets the "collect all seven calibers" bug in a particular platform.

Didn't know about the only five gun law.
In that case, the .30-30 will work perfectly.

Actually I can have 6 long guns on my hunting permit. There is a change in the law going on, increasing the permitted number of hunting guns to 8 (but it is taking like a century to take effect...). If I joined a gun club, I could apply for guns for the various competitive shooting programs the club offered. I’m considering doing that, even though I’m really not the competitive sort.....

The limitations on number of hunting guns has a strange effect on the used guns market. People tend to be a little picky when choosing their guns, since you can only have a limited number, and selling your guns is a bit complicated (the buyer must have a permit, which takes some time and so forth).

Factory rebuilt Mauser m98 target rifle with 28in target barrel, target trigger and target peeps? 50-100$
Marlin 32/20 levergun with some factory ammo, and die set? 230$ (Only seen one, though)
Nice Krag-Jørgensen infantry rifle, 6,5x55? 50-100$
Bubbaized m98 with a simple scope? Noone is buying

It is excruciating with all these bargains I have to pass, since I have the maximum number of guns....

a 30-06 or the like IS a 32-20, or a 30-30, or a moose rifle if your really paying attention.
Amen to that!
That is the beauty of our hobby. We get so much flexibility.
I have 4 centerfire rifles. 3 of them are switch-barrel rifles, with multiple barrels. All my switch-barrel rifles have barrels in 30-06, and 6,5x55. Why? High-quality range brass is abundant on my local ranges. I can fill this brass with a very wide range of loads, from subsonic to full-power moose loads. The cartridge platform simply does not matter that much, when you can take it anywhere you like!
