The old friend ... Sort of.

Do you have that one that you spent years finding? Then you just loved it even though it was a picky whinny prema donna , the journey to success made it worthwhile. Then opportunity knocked and you "fixed" all of the labor intensive bugs with a new barrel and an old favorite cartridge?

Well I did with an old Savage 110LH , when that meant Left hand High grade . Now I have this weird collection of stuff I used for the 1-8.5" 06' barrel that demanded match prep brass that wasn't RP or FC . Yes they did in 1965. I measured the twist a dozen times and yes Savage did build at least one . It's a much less fussy 7×57 now . Grampa's M70 won't shoot the 200 spitzer ownself or 311-230 gr NOE and neither will chamber in the orphan 760 . I'm not likely to send them away, I'm keeping the barrel at least for now also .

The ownself bullet required enhanced lube grooves so I bought a canlure tool .

I made an improvised flash hole deburring tool , just for that rifle and as it turned out kind of exclusive to those 50 cases.

Special load data , 2 dozen targets and a whole summer of first 5 shots over lays on one target , the 06' sizer with the .312 expander ball still in it . The odds and ends list goes on after the 25 yr romance (and heartbreak , hair pulling, education , aggravation , cussing , discovery , elation , wonder ) and realizing in my last trek for a load that that the barrel was just ready to either retire or be set back and rechambered . Who has an 06' that takes a 3.99 OAL to touch the lands with a .312 paper patch?

Of course I will load for a couple of other 06's so the dies and glut of brass won't go to waste .

I look forward to another 20 yr with "Donna" , the Prima Donna , but with more docile requirements for care and feeding.

Well that is sort of how I felt about a lever action 414 SuperMag. Took 5+ years. 1st the planning. What lever action. Then get a rusty barrel Marlin (easiest). Discover there were no 414 SuperMag reamers to rent. Get on the list for a reamer. Wait 2 years. Then the barrel. But JES was reaming to .412 so off it went..
Yea. well worth all the wait.
All the photos are at the other place....

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
Yeah, I have one.

1903 Winchester .22 Auto. When this rifle came out, they didn't want people using normal 22 rounds so they made a special round for it just a bit fatter in the case. If you try to shoot modern 22s in it today, they move around in the chamber too much and will fire about 20% of the time.

Well anyway, I got one many years ago and someone had inserted an adapter in the chamber so it would shoot normal 22s. It must have been done by a gunsmith because it was a press fit and I CAN'T GET IT OUT!

I love the rifle and now have two of them but I'm not going to let it win! I'm gonna get that insert out!

of all the rifles that i have, i'll have to say the Remington m12 in 30 Rem. yes, its old. yes, it's NOT a collector's' finish. and yes to bunch of other stuff, but it is MINE. i always wanted a pump with a fluted tube and now i have it. i bought a original peep sight on eshay for $80 a couple of years ago. depending on whose site it is, it's around $250-300 for an original peep sight. there is no way that i'll buy the original peep sight for $300, it costs more than the rifle!!!

My M14 32 has the old sight on it . Showed it to a guy that did the gun show loop , onceabull , "even with the stock ding , reblue , and initials in the side I bet I could get you 500 for it . That sight is worth 200 alone ." Probably has a market value at 750+ now ,900 if I were to throw in the brass , factory ammo , and dies ....

i got the brass (Graf's) and i think Lee dies. i only shot it about 10 times, it was the only jacketed bullets, i tried to make a 165gr Ranch Dog but the boolit goes from neck to leade. there is no throat. you basically put the boolit too far in the neck.

“That is a beautiful Savage 110.“ That’s something not commonly heard about the Savage 110. Having a left handed rifle like that one would not bother me in the least!
