Two New-To-Me Moulds

Thanks to obssd58 for these two additions to the herd via estate sale, one of which has been a long-sought-after design......15 years plus. That one is an Ideal one-cavity #366408, a design that shot WONDERFULLY for me thanks to samples sent c. 2003 right after I bought the CZ-550 in 9.3 x 62 Mauser. It is a 250 grain Loverin-design plain-base flatnose.

The other design is a Lyman two-banger in pattern #311407, another Loverin in 30 caliber and 180 grains in weight. It lacks the pronounced flatnose of #366408, and I will give this one a test-drive real soon to create some Purina 30-06 Chow for punching paper and ringing steel.

Wow, how cool is that? -- waiting 15-years for a mould and finally finding one!

That #366408 had been out-of-print for a while when I first got the CZ rifle in 2002. Run at 1400 FPS atop 18.0 grains of 2400, they are an all-day-recoil load that closely duplicates the black-powder 38/55 pretty closely.

Yeah, almost like being in a MP Molds group buy, huh? :D

Congrats, Allen, looks like you have a lot to keep you busy in the Bat Cave for a bit.

Yeah, it will keep me off the streets and out of the bars.

In other news, I have about 3/4 of the Starline 45 Auto Rim brass filled with powder and castings now. 100 rounds is loaded with #454424, split evenly between 11.5 grains of AA-9 and 5.0 grains of WW-231. The remaining 100 get Lyman #452460, half are filled with that 5.0 x 231 recipe and the other 50 I dunno about. I'll decide on a powder and weight tomorrow and finish this lot up.

That done, I need to see what empty brass is in queue--then decide if I want to fill that all up or do some casting for the first time since June 2014. It's nice being back at hobby stuff again. At some point I need to fire that 625 with its new fodder, too.

I'd fill that last 50 with a book medium charge of Bullseye or Titegroup, just to round out the spectrum. Casting is like riding a bicycle and great exercise for those days when we feel good but the weather is poor.

I have a 30can louverne that drops real fat 30 cal bullets with the alloy I tried. I didnt size them. They are .318 IIRC. THEY ARE ABOUT 180g. I rem them being too small For the 8mm. Maybe a 303/7.7/7.65 mold?

Im not able to check them or the mold till I get home. I know its a 2 cav Lyman or Ideal cause thats all my buddy has.

I fill my AR cases with Lyman #452423 over 3.0grs of Bullseye. Using the N.O.E. Clone these days. Drops at 246grs from My alloy of 50/50 COWW/#2.
Of course the std .45ACP load works well too.

No Bullseye here, but I do have Red Dot. I am leaning toward good ol' RD for the remaining 50 rounds. The use of AA-9 was sorta random--I was perusing the AA powder manual, and both AA-7 and AA-9 had listings under 45 Auto Rim. Hmmm, says I......THAT is intriguing. As cast, my #454424s scale at 256 grains; the #452460s tip the scale at 199 grains. (92/6/2 alloy)

First in line for the casting bit will be the #452423, along with the #366408. Come to think of it, both of those designs have been long-awaited AND recently-acquired. Ian makes a good point of nice days (like those we have had lately) being used for shooting and the crummy days to come with rain and snow set aside for casting.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.

Sounds like the ticket for some of the real fat303's out there or some of the early 8mm's with the .318 barrel.

Lyman #4 lists Red Dot for .45AR. But only #452374 225grs listed as the Heaviest Bullet.
