Watch Out For the Quiet Ones Or Shooting Plain Base at 100 YDS

You know the old saying......

Well today I had a chance to put it into practice....

This is all Ben's fault..another quiet one he is...along comes the Ben's Red , then after two years the Ben's Liquid Lube...then ..the plain base bullets...sneaky he is....

I screwed up my courage and ran two more of my molds through the wood drill press..yuck..not great looking..BUT.. looks aren't everything ...Thank God!!

One was my NOE 315 the other my NOE 311290....I did the front cavity only on both...

As soon as I was done I set to casting some 315's with COWW+ 2% tin...once again they looked usable..

That was yesterday ..last night I sized and lubed 10....this morning I loaded up 5

I also loaded 5 rounds of 314299 PB (A NOE factory PB Mold)...15 rounds of 30 Hunter PB ( Dan's mangled Mold)...

This morning was so nice I couldn't help myself and went to the range....

Sorry I can't get Imgur to upload anything lately so this is going to be disorganized..

But I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

I think the reason the 10.5 gr load did so poorly in comparison to Waco's was because I sized my bullets .310..

Still trying to get use to the thumb hole stock..also this was the first firing for these cases..

THANKS BEN :):):):):):)

I'm glad that WACO's rifle shoots the R-Dot load so well.
For me however, I've never has much luck with R-Dot with .30 cal. cast bullets.

Dan,
Fantastic shooting...I too am impressed by that 9.3 universal load/ Bullet combo.

Yes, Ben has made a believer out of me also! I get much enjoyment from shooting plain base light loads.
Accurate and economical Doesn't break the bank nor the neck & shoulders!;)
I have modified 3 of my moulds already via the "Ben Hayes Method" Once you get past the initial fear of drilling the first one, the next ones are easy!

Nice shooting . It looks like there are a couple of loads in there with real promise .

Until about a yr ago I'd never gas checked anything . I buy NOE moulds generally as 2+2s . I'm just a pup as far as casting goes I'm only 10 yr into this .

I also have a fondness of NOE 2x2's in fact just ordered another one. However in just thinking
about the factor of shooting plain base cast bullets at a distance, it has in all reality been done
for years. When you look at the larger cal bullets, say 37 to 45 cal, there are a lot of molds out
there that plain based are meant to be shot at long/longer ranges. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the comments guys...
I really just wanted to share...

Like Paul says this has all been done before..

I think it's the use of them in .30 cal. that is new....

I've shot them in 32-40 and 38-55 as well as a bunch of the old Winchester loadings .33,40-60 etc...they did very well..but they weren't bolt guns....the high end single shots on the other hand were a completly different story..

Again ...using an old style bullet in a new platform ...with good optics is really showing how good these designs are....

That 299 showed it's stuff again today...l almost didn't shoot these because we had a steady 18-20 breeze gusting to close to 30..however I was still able to hold 5 well under an inch...
The lighter ones went to 1.25-1.5 ..still out shot a couple of scoped match ARs..

These are no toys they are serious target loads for sure...

Keep 'em flying guys...Dan

PS...I will be moving on to the 30-30 and 06s..

Got a felling the 30-30,will like them.. as it has a 12 twist...the 06s with the 10 might like the 299 and 290..going to PB one cavity of my 284..it's got four so i've got a couple of shots at that one.:)

Dan,
It also shows what a "Great Open sight shooter" can do with a good scope!:D
It is not just the Bullets , load or gun!

Nice shooting Dan! I'll have to try Universal next. I have 11 pounds or so in the shop.

Agree with you Dan on the factor of the PB 30's. You are doing great with
them, and would bet you will be shooting 100 yd bug holes before long.

I'm impressed. I never had good luck with Universal in those big cases. For the '06 and standard-weight, bullets (180-210) I have always had the best luck using Unique for light loads.....but I have typically used gas checks, too. Rather than modify my GC moulds for light loads, these days I simply powder coat GC designs because PC seems to work a little better on a GC bullet than a PB.

Interesting Ian. Looks like you have found a winner in PC'ing the GC's without the check.
